DRIVEN FROM HOMES
Nathez, Miss. April 27—A long
threatened break in the main line
Mississippi river levee along the
west bank in upper Louisiana
came at an early hour this morn
ing when the Lake St. John levee
twelve miles north of Ferriday,
La., went out, turning the flood
waters loose upon the fine farm
ing lands and villages of lower
Texas and Concordia parishes.
Approximately 20,000 persons
will be driven from their homes as
a result of this crevasse, which
will flood a tefritory embracing
about 900 square miles.
The property damage will total
several hundred thousaud dollars.
A break in the levee at Lake
St. John developed at 3:20 o’clock
this morning. People living in
immediate vicinity of the crev.
asse and in nearby towns were
advised to flee fully two hours
before the crash came. It is not
believed any loss of life has re
sulted from the break.
Most of the live stock in the
section which is being flooded had
been moved to the hills on the
Mississippi side of the river and
the loss to the planters from this
source will not be as heavy as
that experinced during the floods
of last year in that section.
Six river steamers and a score
of motor boats were dispatched
to the scene of the crevasse from
Natchez and Vicksburg early to
day for use in rescuing people
from the flooded disrict
The flooded waters from the
lowe/end of Texas parish, prac
tically all of Concordia and a part
of Catrhoula and Franklin par
ishes.
The water will turn pack to the
Mississippi through the Black
and Red rivers.
ALAMO, GEORGIA, FRIDAY, MAY 2, 1913
Death of Mrs. Paltersoo
Yesterday afternoon, just before the
sun sank behind the western hills, our
littffi city was overshadowed with
gloom over the death of one of her
most beloved and highly esteemed aged

I and death came to relieve her of her

all who came in contact with her. She
was a member of the Methodist church
