Wheeler County Eagle OFFICIAL ORGAN WNBKLER COUNTY Published Every Friday, J. H. GROSS, Editor and Publisher Entered at the Post office at Alamo, Georgia aa second class mail matter. May 16, 1913, under the act of March 3rd, 1879. $1 Per Year in Adavance TELEPHONE No. 28. That Georgia is "some” farm ing state is shown in the recent figures given out by the national census bureau. James D. Price, commissioner of agriculture, a close follower of any information relative to farming, points out the Georgia figures that are es pecially interesting. He says that the census shows that in Georgia 1,160,126 persons work for a living, and that 734,366 of these are engaged in farming. Farm operators number 285,247, of which 270,476 are men and 14,771 are women. There are 43^,091 farm laborers, of which 222,566 are men and 195,333 are women. The report shows that there are 30J dairy farms, with 546 laborersand twenty foremen. In his reply recently to a com mittee which urged an extra session of the legislature, to deal with the present cotton situation, Governor Slaton showed wisdom and a regard for economy of the funds, that has called out a great deal of praise- The Governoi showed first that no law could be passed to curtail the cotton crop, which would bear the test of the federal courts, and to call a session merely to adopt reso lutions calling for federal aid would be a useless expense. He told the committee that the mat ter was squarely up to congress. He said the southern represen tatives were fully aware of the south’s needs, and they should go ahead and get action at once without delaying or beating about the bush. - The farmers of this section are are becoming somewhat alarmed oyer the prospects of meeting their obligations this fall. Cotton is all that they have to depend on to pay their bills, and what now seems most puzzling to them is whether or not the staple will be in demand, at living prices, be fore they will be forced to put it on the market. Surely no one can be accused of taking advant age of the present crisis, but every precaution is being used to prevent, if possible, an opportu nitv of this kind being used. Judge Graham will be petitioned to postpone the adjourned term of Wheeler superior court, which is set for the second Monday in November, until the war clouds claar away. The petition is be ing circulated now and is being liberally signed. The signing of the petition does not mean any more than to voice the sentiment of tie farmersinthe postpone ment of any litigation th it might arise at this session of court, that coul 4 , and very likely would, be avoided under normal conditions CITATION GEORGIA, Wheeler County. Georgia is represented in the European war by a thousand or so faithful soldiers, fighting on all sides. They are the Georgia mule, and indespensible adjunct to every army. Ever since the war broke out mules have been in greater demand. It has been the same in sli wars. The Boer trouble took thousands of long eared wagon pullers from Geor gia, Missouri and Tennessee, and now every day sees its steam er load of mules departing for Europe The mule possesses one great value in war—he does not bother his mulish head aboi t noise, smoke or smell, while horses are in a panic and dashing madly about the battlefield.
