Year’s Baseball Hero
Robert “Lefty” Grove
NOW that the World Series is
over, the Mot Stove League
can settle down to a hard winter’s
•work of revising records broken by
the tall, wiry young Philadelphia
Athletics pitcher from Lonaconing,
Md. —"Lefty" Grove.
The biggest record to go by the
boards this season is "Smoky" Joe
Wood’s percentage record of .872,
made when he won 34 games for
Boston and lost 5 in 1912. Grove's
percentage, with 31 wins and 4
losses is .885. But the cracker-box
sages will discover many other new
high marks. The tall Marylander is
the first pitcher in history to lead
both leagues in percentages for
three years in succession. His
three year average is .834, which is
the highest three year average
ever made in the big leagues. It
took three pitchers to set the 1911-
J 913 record of .825.
Grove has won more games in a
season than any left-hander in
baseball history. Other “notable
performances” with which be is
credited include that of striking
out five batters with 17 pitched
balls in a game between the Ath
letics and Cleveland, Aug. 22, 1928.
He pitched 14 clean strikes, a foul,
a ball and another strike.
No one would be more fatigued
by such statistics than Robert
Grove. The man who has taken his
place with Young, Alexander,
Walsh, Matthewson, Johnson and
other historic pitchers talks freely
on two subjects—cigars and hunt
ing. Like many other prosperous
young men Grove prides himself on
his connoisseurship of fragrant
Havana cigars; like many of his
colleagues on the diamond he keeps
an arsenal of hunting equipment
and spends the winter tramping
the bills after game.

HONEY COOKIES SWEETEN
THE SCHOOL LUNCH BOX
One of these days the efforts of the
busy little bee are going to be appre
ciated for what they are really worth,
and when that day conies we’ll all of
us be eating more honey than we do
at present. Honey is a natural sugar,
pure, wholesome, and nourishing. It
can safely be given to even young
children and is an ideal way of sweet
ening much of their food.
For the children's lunch box or for or
dinary table service, try making them
honey cookies. They satisfy their nat
ural craving for a bit of something
sweet after the rest of the meal, and
add a considerable amount of nour
ishment. The recipe calls also for
brown sugar, which gives a richer fla
vor; butter, a good source of the vi
tamine A, chopped nuts and raisins,
supplying energy and nourishment, and
the honey. Another Important factor
from Hie health standpoint Is the self

rising Hour. Self-rising flour is flour
with the baking powder and salt add
ed. This baking powder is made
of monocalclum-phosphate and soda
Bones and teeth are largely composed
of calcium (or lime) and phosphorus,
so you can see how important it is for
the growing child to have a sufficient
amount of those minerals. Both of
these minerals are supplied In a good
form in self-rising flour.
Self-rising flour is economical be
cause It requires no additional baking
powder. It Is also a great time saver.
There's the time saving in measuring
and sifting (you sift self-rising flour
only once), and time saving in stirring.
Cookies made with self-rising soft wheal
(lour should be put together gently,
quickly, and with a light touch. Too
much stirring and beating will make
any soft wheat product heavy. From
start to finish you can make these self
rising cookies In eight minutes, which
would ordinarily require fifteen to put
together. Every mother who has ever
snatched time out of the air in order
to make a batch of cookies knows that
this Is a saving worth while.
The recipe Is as follows:
Honey Cookies.
% cup brown sugar % cup seeded rats
% cup strained Ins cut fine
honey 44 cup finely
1 e g ß chopped nuts
7 tbsps. butter 1 teaspoonful mace
3% cups self-rls- or nutmeg
Ing flour
Mix the sugar, egg and shortening
together. Beat until thoroughly blend
ed. Add other ingredients In order
given, roll and cut. Bake in moderate
(350 degrees F.) oven for about 20
minutes. You will find these will cut
much better if you allow them to chill
thoroughly or stand over night before
cutting.
If you have to buy shelled nuts for
the cookies, get the broken pieces
They are just as fresh and good, and
the saving is considerable.
