TO make a tight-fitting job when
renewing auto-hose connections,
get a length of hose in a size just a
little too Brtiall to be forced over the
nipples of the radiator tank and en
gine block. To swell the ends of the
hose sufficiently to enable them to
be slipped over the nipples, soak the
ends in gasoline for about an hour.
Slip the ends into place. Adjust the
clamps after the gasoline has evap
orated, when it will be found that
the hose has a tight grip on the
nipples. Do not use hose having wire
or unusually heavy fabric reinforce
ments.

* Open seams in the casing are
usually responsible when a muffler
suddenly becomes noisy. The leaky
seams can be distinguished by the
boot-blackened appearance, and can
easily be sealed with ordinary as
bestos furnace cement.

AN easy way to clean spark plugs
is to spray them thoroughly
with carbon tetrachloride. A fevz
minutes after spraying, the carbon
will be loosened and can easily be
scraped off. Then blow the spark
plugs out with compressed air. A
hand fire extinguisher is useful for
spraying the liquid, bu.t any kind of
I spray gun can be used. Carbon
tetrachloride is inexpensive and can
be bought at most drug stores.

Leaks in the gasoline tank can be
stopped with shellac. Remove the
tank, dry it out, then pour in shel
lac. Swish the shellac over all the
surfaces and into all the corners.
Drain off the shellac and let the
tank dry before re-filling.

THE FARM BUDGET
Ry DAN H. OTIS,
Agricultural Director, American
Rankers Association
Inventories aid in the formation of
a farm budget. Some banks, as well
as the Farm Credit Administration,

recommend out
lining in advance
the method of
using production
loans. Under this
plan provision is
made for monthly
expenditures and
funds are granted
to the borrower in
accordance with
the budget plan.
The budget helps
to show how loans
can be repaid.
With the accu
mulate d data
from previous inventories and budgets,
budget making becomes easier and
more accurate and valuable. As ono
branch of the farming plant requires
more expenditure, such as for new ma
chinery, fencing, livestock, etc., it may
be necessary to limit other branches in
order to meet these pressing require
ments.
The budget helps to formulate a fi
nancial program. It is of special Im
portance in arranging to meet special
or large expenditures. If the income
and expenditures are carefully budg
eted it prevents the spending of money
needed for interest and taxes before
the time of their payment arrives. It
helps to provide a reserve.
The Agricultural Commission of the
American Bankers Association feels
that this type of work is so important
that special emphasis has been placed
upon the field of farm inventories,
budgets and credit statements ar one
of its national projects tor farm aid.

From Fruit to Jelly and Jam
in Twelve Easy Steps
MOI
. L- r j
'T'HE above “jelly ring’’ shows pic
torially how any housewife —or
her daughter—can make jelly or
jam in practically no time at all.
It’s easy, it’s interesting, and the
result will be gratifying to the en
tire family. Here are the 12 easy
steps: (1) Wash fresh fruit in colan
der. (2) For jam, grind fruit
through meat chopper. (3) For
jelly, press the fruit through a wet
flannel cloth with a potato masher.
(4) Sterilize jelly glasses. (5) Heat
paraffin in a teapot over hot water.
(6) Measure fruit or juice and sugar
accurately. (7) Add sugar to pre-
A PROPHECY
Significant economic developments
to be expected in the next decade are
listed by a prominent business writer
as follows: (1) Higher standard of
living. (2) Continued advances in tech
ideal processes of production. (3) Fac
tory built houses, better and cheaper
than hand made houses. (4) Somewhat
cheaper money. (5) Faster travel. (G)
News printed by radio. (7) Mechanical
cotton picker, revolutionizing the
South. (8) Cheaper electric power. (»)
Better distribution of goods; more
chain stores. (10) Another depression
five or six years hence, preceded by
an inflationary boom.
Animal, That Do Not Change
The cows, and the pigs, and the
tigers, and the lions, and all the other
creatures, ranging from the tiny chip
munks to the great hippopotamuses,
are today as they have always been
through recorded history.

pared fruit or fruit juice, mixing
thoroughly. (8) Stir while the mix
ture comes to a tumbling boil. (9)
For jelly, add bottled fruit pectin
as soon as the mixture boils. For
jam, cook fruit and sugar mixture
until it reaches a full rolling boil,
stir constantly for exact time speci
fied; then remove from fire and stir
in bottled fruit pectin. (10) Skim
the jelly with metal spoon. (11)
Pour the hot jam or hot jelly into
sterilized glasses. (12) Paraffin hot
jelly and jam at once.
And there you have it—delicious,
fragrant jelly or jam to tickle the
palates of the whole household.
TWO QUESTIONS ANSWERED
Why is it that one farmer raises 100
bushels of corn to the acre, and the
other one, on the other side of the
fence, raises 25 bushels to the acre':
Why is it that one farmer produces 101
pounds of pork on five bushels of corn,
and another uses 25 bushels? Not until
power machinery, scientific principles
of soil fertilization and restoration,
rotation of crops, diversification of
crops and economical feeding are ap
plied to the farm, will the farmers'
problem be solved, says a farm au
thority.
BANKING READY
NEW YORK. — There is abundant
evidence that banks are in an unusual

United States, through its loans, was
the potential owner of more than halt

Handy Pies
A PUMPKIN pie is a mighty
handy thing to have around
during the holidays, even if
you aren’t a movie comedian.
People do other things with pump
kin pies besides plastering them
all over other people’s faces, you
know. So here’s a good way to
make a simple
Country Pumpkin Pie: Smooth
one-half cup cottage cheese, or
pass it through a sieve, then mix
with one and a third cups canned
pumpkin. Mix two-thirds cup
sugar with two-thirds teaspoon
salt, two-thirds teaspoon ginger,
two-thirds teaspoon cinnamon and
one-fourth teaspoon nutmeg, and
add with two beaten eggs and one
and a third cups milk. Heat in
a double boiler and pour into a pie
tin lined with pastry. Bake, hav
ing oven hot, 450 degrees, for first
ten minutes, then reducing it to
325 degrees for remaining time,
about thirty minutes or until a
knife inserted comes out clean.
This makes one pie.
Or Else
If you’re feeling drossy, you can
doll up a pumpkin pie so that its
country cousin wouldn’t recognize
it on the table. If you feel that
way about it, try this
Pumpkin Pie with Marshmal
lows: Add two-thirds cup sugar,
one-fourth cup dark molasses, one
half teaspoon salt, one-half tea
spoon cinnamon and one teaspoon
ginger to two cups canned pump
kin (or half the contents of a No.
3 can). Add two beaten eggs, one
cup milk and one-half cup cream,
and heat in double boiler. Pour
into tin lined with pastry and bake
at 450 degrees for ten minutes,
then at 325 degrees for thirty
minutes or till set. Cut twelve
marshmallows in halves and lay
over top. Return to oven until
marshmallows are browned.

A HANDY grease gun for your
transmission or differential can
easily be made from an old tire
pump. Cut the barrel down to a con
venient length. Whittle a round
wooden plug to fit the barrel. Drill
a hole in the center of the plug, in
sert a short length of brass tubing,
and force the plug into place in the
barrel. Internal suction of the pump
plunger will draw in the grease.

A blowtorch will usually loosen

working on the heated nut be sure
to use a tight-fitting wrench, so as
