'T'HE expression “nobody home” is
J undoubtedly slang when used to
denote stupidity. It is, however,
slang with the backing of Alexander
Pope, one of the most eminent of the
Eighteenth Century poets. One of
Pope's famous couplets reads:
"You beat your pate, and
fancy wit will come:
Knock as you please, there’s
nobody at home.”

An eminent man may be a prom

not necessarily eminent. "Eminent” ■
is properly used in speaking of a
man who ranks high in his profes

prominent man is merely one who
stands out from his fellows.

Fighting Vegetable Pests
I7IRST, some advice of a general
. nature: Make certain what pest
you are tighUn..;; get prepared mix
tures retlwr ti<’i mixW your own,
I and folicov c>> iy directions on
their usf: remember that excellent
treatment of plants—good feeding,
cultivation, use of good soil and
healthy seed—is the first step in sue
cessful pest control.
There are two major classifica
tions of insect pests —chewing and
sucking. > '
Chewing insects, such as beetles,
leave telltale holes in leaves. Con
trol by dusting or spraying plants
with arsenicals (poisons with arsen
ate of lead as a base). These reme
dies are known as stomach poisons,
for they must be eaten by the in
sects. Plants commonly attacked by
chewing insects include cucumber,
squash, other vine crops, mustard,
tomato and p- Trer.
Sucking insects, such as aphis or
plant lice, can be detected in small
groups on the under surface of the
leaves Regular inspections should
be made. Control by dusting or
spraying, directly on the insects,
nicotine sulphate or pyrethrum.
These insects do not eat exterior
plant texture and must be killed by
a poison fatal to them by contacting
their bodies. Among plants attacked
are pea', pepper, cabbage, and
crops being grown for greens.
Special treatment should be given
two poets—cutworm and leaf beetle.
The former (a chewii^ insect) is
very fond of all young plants and
is controlled by spreading about a
apponful ot “poison bran bait" near
each plant. This should be done at
nightfall. *
Beetles (also chewing insects) are
found on tomato, pepper, turnips
and other plants. They can be par
tially controlled by a Bordeau mix
ture spray containing an arsenical.

■ N EV ER run an engine in which
11 alcohol is used as the anti-freeze
agent, after steam starts to issue
from the overflow pipe. The steam
will cause the radiator solution to
run out of the overflow pipe until the
radiator is empty. Scored cylinders,
burnt pistons, etc., are likely to be
the result.

When an automatic shutter,' or
winter front, fails to open at any
temperature, the thermostatic unit
is probably defective and should be
replaced. When the shutters open,
but will not close, the trouble is
. probably due to a broken closing
spring.

Check the generator charging
rate. Because of the heavy demand
on the storage battery during cold
weather, it is often advisable to in
crease thg generator output during
the winter months.
