thoroughly mixed pour over crushed
ice in glasses. Six servings.

When framing valuable etchings,
water colors or prints which will
remain in their frames for soma
time, it is suggested that they be
• backed with a sheet of pressed wood
Instead of the customary cardboard.
If they are then sealed with gummed
tape, changes in the humidity of the
room cannot reach the drawing and
they remain clean until taken out
of the frame. If accidentally dropped,
the pressed wood keeps the frame
rigid in most cases and prevents
the glass from breaking. Many
costly works of art have been cut
or torn by broken glass when the
frame has been dropped on the
floor.

Hints to Gardeners
o
by Harold Coulter A
Vegetable Expert
Ferry Seed Inntitute
Soil Study Important
A few minutes’ consideration of
the condition and make-up of
the soil in your garden just before
planting can make a marked differ
ence in your success as a gardener.
Clayey soils require the most
careful handling but are heavily
productive. Sandy soils are “early”
and sandy loams are just about
ideal for most home garden crops.
In some southern states two crops
may be grown, one in fall and one
in spring. <
Peas, lettuce, cabbage, broccoli,
cauliflower, beets, carrots, radish
and onion prefer plenty of moisture
and moderately cool temperatures
during development. These should
be planted about as early in the
Fall as weather permits in order
that they may make their early
growth before cooler weather sets
in. s
These plantings will yield an
abundance of produce for use dur
ing winter months. Some of these
vegetables may be planted again In
early spring for green spring vege
tables. •
The following vegetables are not
as hardy as those listed above and
are better grown as spring crops:
Sweet corn, beans, tomato, pepper,
egg plant, cucumber, melons, squash
and pumpkin. They prefer abund
ant sunshine, and while they pros
per best when ample moisture la
available they are able to do well
during comparatively dry weather..
They do best on loamy soils, but
carefully prepared clay soils pro
duce splendid crops.
Herbs do well in comparatively
poor soil, and maintain growtq
under rather drouthy conditions.
Under the same conditions, radish,
turnip, parsnip, salsify and other
root vegetables may be expected to
perform fairly well.
If you must do some of your
gardening in ground that is seml
shaded, try growing beans, radishes
or peas, f " "

WE'RE sure you’ve noticed that
the most delicious food served
on chipped china reposing on a
slightly grubby tablecloth arrests
your appetite as nothing else will!
You’re too fastidious a woman to
make these mistakes —but your en
tire dining room should match the
sparkle of your china, your linens,
your glassware.
For this reason your window
shades should not jar on your eye
sight or that of your guests! Shadaa.
should be clean and fresh as a
spring daisy! The simplest way to.
achieve this is to hang good doth
shades at your windows. You can
order them in tones to match your
spring draperies, and blend In with,
your curtains.
Whatever color you choose, so®.
to it that you get first quality cloth .
shades. Then you won’t have to '
worry about April showers—for
these shades won't crinkle. You
can forget about dust —for good
shades help to keep out dust.
You can be assure^ that they're.

if all this isn't enough, you can stn“
worrying about “pin holes." Cl

| When an automatic shutter, or

l is probably defective and should be
i replaced. When the shutters open,
but will not close, the trouble is
probably due to a broken closing
