I Nibble and stay thin Is the motto of the bridge playing hostess who
i fortifies her guests with grapefruit peel candied in pineapple juice in
! stead of chocolates and bonbons.
I : ;

two cans of pineapple juice and
four straws give them just the right
lift to get them through the morn

Cinema stars, however, are not
tho only women in the world who
have a strenuous job and a desire
to keep a trim figure. Housewives
and young business women every
where have the same problem and
they are not immune from mid
afternoon or mid-morning fatigue.
As a "pick me up” that neither puts
on unwanted poundage or spoils
luncheon or dinner appetites, pine
apple juice provides n remarkably

vitamin content of the juice is a big
help in keeping the body fit too.

Locate Crops, Logically
rpHINGS to remember:
X If you have a choice of loca
tion for your gm? :l ci, choose a place
where there is plenty of sun, away
from trees. Tree roots take nour
ishment from the ground and shade
the garden from the sun.
Work the soil deeply, making the
top thre^ or four inches as fine and
loose as possible.
If you have had little experience
and. wish to try vegetables which
are easiest to grow, plant radishes, .
carrots, beets. Swlc-; chard and tur
nips. Witli a good-sized garden you
might also try spinach, peas, beans
and corn.
If your garden is small and you
want to gel the most satisfactory
returns, try th- following quick
growing vegetable-.: Radish, leaf let
tuce, beets, carrots, peas and be ms.
You can r<: lcnt most m these after
space has been made for th«m by I
early harvest.
Try tearing just n coiner from
the seed packet, and tap the seeds
into Gw ilriil or ium. v.
For bettor germination; pour
water into the drill or furrow just I
before sowing. Vue enough water
to molten the soil but not enough i
to cau. o caking.
Do not plant s -Is deeper than
directed.

THE English language is capable j
of some odd paradoxes, as is il- •
lustrated by the following senten
ces:
“When the ciash cccu.-ed the
pilot was in charge of the ship.”
“When the ciash ?cu ■ -.1 the
ship was in cl.arg? of the pilot.” _ I
Each of the two sentences is j
factually nnd rranwiaticaUy cor- I
rect. Their meuw . j- ar. Both
tell the rcadui tha die ship was j
being directed by the pilot when
the crash occurred. But if the
phrase “in charge of” is given
exactly the same sense in both sen
tences, the latter sentence will ac
tually say that when the crash
occurred the ship was directing the
pilot. Our min-i. subconsciously
make iha necessary distinction be
tween the sense in which the same
phrsuse is used in the two sentences.
