US PEOPLE
By G. C. Barnhill
Talk about progress, it is here.
All of us remember the old straw
brodm our mothers use to sweep
the floor with, and you remem
ber what a time it was to get a
good string to keep the straw
tight. All that has to be done
now, is get an old inner tube,
cut some strings of rubber from
it, then tie the old straw broom
with this rubber string. What a
glorious feeling it stays tied.
The town folks do not have these
kind of brooms, because they
never scour, and of course have
to use mops to keep thehs
rubbeed off.
Weiner Roast
The intermediate class of the
Glenwood Methodist church en
joyed a weiner roast Wednes
day night, at the home of Mrs.
Bishop Pope. Games were played,
after which weiner and marsh
meallows were roasted.
A very nice time was had by
all.

Draft Yarns
From Austin Dean, of theli
Gainesville Eagle, comes the best I
of all —I think —stories about the :
draft:
Young Gainesville man was"
asked on that fateful Wednesday I
whether he had registered fori
possible defense of his country..;
“Hell, no,’’ he said. “I can’t. Li
didn’t pay my poll tax.”
And Uncle Jack Hilton, of the;
: Banks County Journal, comes
through with one registrant who
didn’t know how old he was
। ’ceptin’ hit was between 30 and
i 35. He didn’t know his birthday.
“But,” he explained, “the best
I kin remember, hit was in the
I summer time.”
i Over in Union Springs, Ala., a
Negro registrant was allso a bit
uncertain.
। “1 don’t know exactly, ma’am., b
Ihe told the teacher at the desk.
“But my mammy always said L
1 was horned the first ’tater pickin'
time after Halley’s comet,”
Well, any well-informed teach
jer should be able to figure that
i out.
