Governiot Talmadge
Deserves Cooperation
Governor Talmadge is asking
this legislature to give him thi
State’s purse strings. His cam
paign promises were that he
could run the Staton the pre
sent revenue, which he will do
provided he has full luanigrment
of its finances. If he is barn
strung be will be powerless to
function, but the mandate givei
him in the last piimary was
conclusive that the people were
perfectly satisfied to give him
what he asked for. He made it
clear in toe beginning that hi
would need the coopei ation r.ec'
essary to this end. He should
have this, which we believe h<
■will get. If hindered in his efforts
to get the proper cooperation, it
leaves us as at the end of the
present year. It is time for some
concrete action on the part of
all in authority. The people of
the State want to see something
accomplished and believe that
we have a Chief Executive at the
State Capitol that can do that
very thing. He is honest wit'
the people, as he has asked that
in reducing the State’s expenses
he also includes bis own salat y
as Governor.

Beans For A Purpose
rO get the most from his bean
crop, the gardener should be
well acquainted with the many
available varieties, of stringless
beans. Then he should plant those
varieties best suited to his partic
ular needs.
If earliness is his principal in
terest, he should select either Boun
tiful (green-podded) or Ferry’s
Golden Wax (yellow).
Bountiful, besides being about as
early as any other bean, is excellent
for use when small, in shoe-string
size. Bountiful is also a good choice
for the gardener growing for home
canning, for it produces abundantly.
The gardener interested in yield
over a long season should select
both a bush bean, like Bountiful or
Ferry's Golden Wax, and a pole
bean. The pole beans begin produc
ing when the yield from the bush
beans tapers off.
Kentucky Wonder is one of the
best all-purpose pole beans. It pro
vides good quality snap beans.
When past the snap stage the pods
may be cut up and cooked southern
style. Later, Kentucky Wonder may
be used in the green shell stage.
In the more mature stage the beans
(or seeds) may be used in baking
or in soup.
For such a wide range of use,
the white-seeded Kentucky Wopder
(Burger’s Green Pod Stringless),
also white-seeded, may prove more
satisfactory than the regular brown
seeded variety. The dark colored
seeds produce less attractive dishes
when cooked long or when in soups.

Quick Gardens
FIR the beginning gardener who
wants quick results or for the
new home owner who needs outdoor
decoration quickly, the lists of an
nual flowers offer speedy and effec
tive aid.
A highly satisfactory and highly
economical hedge, for instance, can
be grown in six or eight weeks from
seed. Kochia is the plant in ques
tion. A single packet of Kochia
seed will provide a fuli, bushy
hedge along the front or side of a
yard. If a flowering hedge is pre
ferred, the colorful and dependable
Four O’clock will prodtice attrac
tively within two months after seed
is planted.
For screening along an alley or
unsightly vacant lot, Sunflowers or
Castor Beans will spring into sturdy
growth in a few weeks.
Glowing borders of flowers that
beautify the yard and at the same
time provide a steady flow of cut
flowers for the housewife may be
enjoyed the first summer of oc
cupancy in a new home. The fastest
growing and most dependable an
nuals for cutting include the Zin
nias, Marigolds, Bachelor Buttons,
and Petunias.
These flowers are mentioned in
the plural form, for there are tall,
medium, and short varieties of each
which may be employed to plant a
border which places taller varieties
at the back and the low-growing,
smaller ones in front.
Neat little edgings along the
front of flower borders or along
walks and driveways may also be
had —solidly decked in blossom—
within six or eight weeks after
planting seed. Alyssum (Carpet of
Snow) is one of the most depend
able edging favorites.
And there need be no delay in
having the new cottage or home
vine-covered. Several of the most
popular annual vines grow so vigor
ously that they can be twining
themselves around second-story
window shutters by mid-summer if
planted in the spring.
Most widely-used of these fast
growing annual vines is Heavenly
Blue Morning Glory, whose giant,
soft-blue flowers are in a class by
themselves. It is well to scratch the
coat of Heavenly Blue seeds before
planting them to speed their other
wise slow germination.

Handling Herbs
HERBS may easily be worked into
the home garden program be
cause they require comparatively
little space. A plot about four by
six feet will be large enough for
average needs.
Herbs should have full sunlight
and good loamy soil. Some, princi
pally rosemary and marjoram, have
attractive growth. They should be
located in the herb plot where they
will show to advantage.
Almost all popular herbs —balm,
basil, borage, fennel, marjoram,
rosemary, thyme, sage, anise, dill,
and caraway—may either be used
when young and fresh, or prepared
for use dried.
To prepare balm, basil, borage,
sage, savory, fennel, thyme, and
marjoram for later use, cut them
in the young stage and dry slowly
in a dustless, airy room. They may
be tied in bunches and hung head
downward, or suspended in large,
loosely-tied paper bags. It is ad
visable to label the bags, for some
herbs look alike when dried.
If seed of anise, dill, caraway, or
fennel are to be prepared for use
dried, cut seed heads with short
stems as soon as they begin to
ripen. Dry in the shade on thin
cheese cloth or muslin and store in
a dry, airy place in* covered con
tainers. Seeds should be washed and
dried before they are used.
Anise, basil, borage, dill, and
savory are annuals; caraway and
fennel are biennials; and balm,
marjoram, sage, rosemary, thyme,
and chives are perennials, although
balm and marjoram are best treated
as annuals. All the herbs discussed
here will probably produce enough
growth for use the first year, how
ever, if seeds are planted early and
climate is normally temperate.
