War and the Public School.
All Americans are agieed that
O’jr war against agression must
come first n everything that we
do. Pnduction must be geared
for war; Priorties depend on wai
need?; the action of every Ame
rican should depend upon wheth
er that action will help win the
war.
War should come first. This is
true in industry, and it should be
title in enducation. Educators
today hive an excellent opporau
nity to help win the war. They
are in a position to strengths
America for the future through
their important contacts with tht
younger generation.
Many teachers are, for exam*
pie, explaining to the younger
generation our ideals of freedom
and domocracy, End the impor
i. mce of protecting them. Thej
iotelligenty reveal the issued,
aims and progress of the war;
thus, many of the younger gm 3
ration are able to accurately
ap, rib sr the value if oui
heritrgi.
Teachers in the public school
have a great responsibly today
They must prepare the minds of
the youths of the nation to with*
stand the terribl ordeal ahead,
they must keep morale high.
DEAD: 40,000 Americans.
Traffic accidents reached an
all time high last year. More than
40,000 were killed. In addition to
this, about 110,000 Americans
receive! permanent disabilitis
as a result of traffic accidents,
and there were approximately
1,300,000 other traffie injuries
not of a peamanent nature.
If the auto death rate during
1941 was an average during tht
natural span of life, each person
in Wheeler County would have
more than one chance out of
fifty six of being killed by an
automobile; one chance out of
twenty of being permanently
disabled, and the odds would be
58 to 42 thatyou would be injured
in a traffic accident.
These facts are startling! Nev
ertheless, we Americans cant get
very worried over automobile
accidents, because we know that
auto production has stopped, that
tires are no longer for sale, and
again we are reading of a pos
aible gasoline shortage. Weare
inclined to feel that these restric
tions will solve the highway safe
ty problem.
The problem, however, will not
solve itself. It is true there will
be fewer new automobiles on the
road, but there will also be more
old autos on the road. Another
thing, there will be a shortage
of high grede mechanics and of
the repair parts that are necess
ary to keep the vihicles in safe
running condition.
People will drive on tires that
would have been classed as unfit
or unaaleble in 1941.Automobi es
that are not properly repaired
and that run on slick tires will
certainly prove more dangerous
than new cars and new tires
were last year.
In other words, In 1942 many
people will be killed in automo
biles and by automobiles. And
the number that are billed in
this county will depend, to a
large degree, on the care that
the drivers of Wheeler County
take. Killing ourselves in traffic
accidents won’t rid us of the
Yellow Menaace in the Far East
or of the German Menance in
Europe.

Strategically spotted along our coasts.,.
on far-off island possessions . . . are scores of “plotting
rooms”—nerve centers of defense against attack. Here, in
formation of approaching enemy planes is received and in.
stantly flashed to authorities in areas affected.
On home fronts, too, industries and citizens are on the
alert against unscrupulous individuals or small groups whose
lawless conduct constitutes another, equally-challenging peril
to our American way of life.
• Typical example of this vigilance is the Self-Regulation
program of Georgia's $10,000,000 beer industry. When this
Committee finds unlawful conditions at a retail outlet, action
starts. Unless the place immediately cleans up, it is turned
over to the authorities to close up.
Only the reputable beer retailer deserves
reputable patronage. That’s how YOU can help.
