while. He is just getting up from
a severe case of blood poisining,
and be is able to get about with
the aid of crutches.

Soperton was Coite Somers Co.,
of Vidalia. Amount of contract
covering construction, in twelve
counties, was 1124,680.
The contract io said to be for
five units per county and the
projoet covers 20 units a county
Concrete blocks are reported to
have been selected.

Commander Gene Tunney
To Be In Atlanta April 2
Atlanta—“ Gene” Tunney,
Commander, USNR, and former
heavyweight boxing champion of
the world, who has been ap
pointed Director of the Physical
Fitness Program of the United
States Navy, will be in Atlanta
on April 2nd, at the Navy Re
cruiting Station, Post Office
Building, between 9a. m. and 5
p. m., for the purpose of inter*
viewing applicants for enlistment
as Chief Specialists, Class V6>
USNR, for duty as physical in
structors.
Commander Tanney recently
said, “Ultimate success in this
war will depend upon our man
power and stamina. The United
States Navy is undertaking a
vigorous program to build up the
strength and endurance of its
personnel. All physical instruc
tors and wall qualified athletes
with college degrees between
the ages of twenty one and twenty
five are urged to make applica
tion to participate in this pro
gram. Men without college train*,
ing need not apply. Ratings ol
Chief Specialists, which is the
highest non commissioned rating,
are given to accepted applicants.
“All accepted applicants are
sent to the Naval Training station,
Norfolk, Virginia, fora six weeks
course in Naval indoctrination
and method of training. After a
vigorous six weeks these men
become full fledged physical
instructors and will be sent to
the various Naval activities.”
All applicants must have in
their possession at the time of
their interview a transcript of
their college record, a birth
certificate, a discharge if they
have had any previous military
service, and a small picture taken
within the last week.
Eighth Grade English Class
The Bth grade English class of
the Alamo High school has or
ganized a club, since they met
the last half of the period on
Friday. Sara Purvis named it
the “Thirty Minute Club.”
The officers for our club are
as follows:

Secretary—M*ary Wood.
Reporter- Flossie Faulk.
Assistant Reporter—Sara
Purvis.
We have an English Box in
which each member puts
words pronounced incorrectly,
or any grammatical errors made
during the day by their class
mates.
We are glad to have new mem
bers in our class, they are Madge
Colson, Allee Brantley, and
Rachel Purvis.
The teacher of this class is
Mrs Harry Smith.
Library News.
In the W. P. A. Libaray this
month I have collected much new
material on National Defense,
Some of the material is phmph
lets on air raids, blackouts, a
soldiers life, flying cadets, food,
nursing and many others.
I want to uage every person
in the community to use the W.
P. A. Library for the center of
information for National Defense
Let me also mention our new
books this month. We received
85 new ones. Some of them are:

Dublin Blacksmith
Dies After Stroke.
Dublin, March 24 — Seavices
for S. M. Sutton, 62, Dublin black
smith, who died Tuesday at his
residence of a stroke, after a
short illnees, were held Wednes
day at 11 a. m. at the Glenwood
Baptist church, the Rev. C. E.
Vines officiating. Buiial was in
the Glenwood cemetery.
Mr. Sutton was a native of
Wilkinson county. Surviving are
his wife, the former Miss Sallie
Mae Lowe; three sons, George R,
Sutton, Fort Knox, Ky; Milton
Sutton, Seattle, Wash., and J. T?
Sutton, Dublin; two daughters,
Misses Avis and Glenese Sutton,
Dublin; brothers, L. A. Sutton,
Jacksonville, Florida, and J. A.
Sutton, Laßelle, Florida, and
