Babson Says They
Are Our Best
Charleston, 8. C., May I.—As
today is Child’s Health Day. 1
Should like to write of children
as an investment and insurance,
First, let me say that I believe in
standard life ipsurance as sold
by strong companies. Parents,
however, should not depend
wholly upon such policies or
even upon stocks, bonds, or real
estate., Their only sure protec
tion is a family of healthy, intels
ligent, and God fearing children.
Talk about miracles! Arethert
any comparable with the conceps
tion of a little child, I have in
mind not the tiny eyebrows, the
perfect finger nails, and these
o)vious things which appear to
mothers—but rather the child’s
marvelous unseen digestive,
circulatary, nervous, and other
systems. Consider the power to
see and to L.ear—to taste and to
8 nall! The mschanisms of the
eye and brain alone far excellany
.n ‘ention by man,
Think of the yossibilities of the
brain of a livtle child. Realize its
ability for analysis, leadership
and bappiness. There is no reas
son why there should not be
thousands of Kiisons, Marconis
and Fords—thousands of Shake
spears, Dickenses and Longlfel
lows: thousands of Darwins,
Pasteurs and Einstips.
OI course, we must use com-l
mon sense in breeding childien
just a8 we would use in breeding
an.mals, trees or plants. We
must have yood stock. Some
people are not fitted so: parent
hood. Hence, young people
should take care with whom they
mate. There is, however, enougl
good stock to breed a constantly
growing and better race if the
value of children could be appre
ciated. By value Il do not mesan
grmeathing dreamy and idealist'c
in the fature. I refer to a defis
nite and concrete value in dollar s
and conts.
The first command in the Bible
i 3 to "multiply and replenish the
earth’. Until recent yea-s large
fimilies have been synonomous
with Christian homes. The mus
rality of the world depends ba
sically upon the proportion of
children which the better fam+
ilies bring into the world. Stas
tistics as to school houses,
church buildings. college endow
ments, missionary gilts, etc. are
Ivrgely window dres-ing. Raising
a tamily of good children is the
tirst doty of men and women.
A realization of the above facts
i 3 the great need of America
today. Money, pensions and so-~
eial legislation may soon be of
Jistle value under present declins
ing birth rate tendencies. Rems
ember what lis happ:ning to
France and is perhaps happening
to England. Besides, the cycle
of life indicates that we are
gradually returning to that pers
jod when land and children will
again be our main assets. Wise
are those young people who now
anticipate coming events by
investing in and developing
natures really sound investment.
Many are wondering what will

happen after World War 11—to
our economic system, to our | O
litical traditions, and to the
church., We assume that those
now in control will decide these
questions. We forgot that we
}oldsters are gradually passng
out of the picture and that an
entirely new group will have
unlimited power. The answer
lies with our children. What are
we doing to train them for thes:
coming responsibilities?
Our present American way of
life exists because of a certsin
balince of power made up in
right proportions of employers
and wage workers, educators ard
students, church members and
“outsiders’, conservatives and
radica!s. The success of Amer.ca
has been due largely to the di
versification of these groupsin
proper proportions. Bu!l what if
these proportions are upset?
Such a misfortune will occur

and conservative families contins
