The Bride Shipped to wrdcr. |
BY LAIIRIE TODD, f
* • • • •
I lived in Virginia during tffe winter
of 13-18. At an evening party in Ricli
ntotui there weie twelve nintlfer?. twelve
daughters, ami a tolerable sprinkling ol
lathers, sons, widows, and widowers pres
ent, with Laurie Todd in their midst; ami
you may be sure we had some fun. Com;
versing with ;>rr ancient tufty, she remark-j
etl that her grandfather left’ IScaffirm!
when young, and settled in Virginia.
He became a merchnnt ntu} a planter, and
grew ricli. His agent in Giascow was
.Alexander McAlpiti, to wffiotu fie consign
ed two <.r three cargoes iff lobarco every
year, and received in return cash, hard
ware, dry goods, etc. lie had (locks and
herds, men-servants ansi maid-servants,
•horses and moles; buCone thing he ye't
lacked—he had no pretty wife to sing
■with him when he car..e home at night,
fatigued wiflri (MHiiing money, and Stitt i..
ted with worldly pelf, for he h id more of
that than Iteait could wish. So,’ after a
‘while, he concluded to take a wife—as
noon as he £mdd catch one.
But here was the rub. His lime was
so occupied with his business that lie
could not find time to look about him for
a wife; and worse than all, he was a bash
’ltd man. When he saw a maiden of
twenty advancing in his path, he woo'd
cross the street, tearful of being killed by
a shot from her sparkling eyes. Hut a
remedy was at hand, however. He had,
often heard his parents speak tnurli in
praise of the bonny lassies ol Scotland.
A bright idea struck him. When he was
leaving the ttfiice, his clerk"was copying
a duplicate order for sundries to be sent
as part of the return cargo. He thought
to himself that lie would order a young
lassie for a wife, as the last Hein on the
r list. The article was ordered according
ly
At the same time lie wrote a private let
ter of instructions to-his agent, Mr. Me-’
Alpin, giving a minute description of the
nrtirle wanted, as to age, height, wealth,
..etc. In short site must be u bonny Scotch
atapsit-; to he sent on the return of Ins
Wfi ship; iter name to be on the manifest
bifflid” lading, etc. He promised, on ar
fiwKßlht liave jpgf a house of a
/respectable widow
if agreeable to the |
would m >kv her Ids wife fit thirty days af
ter her arrival, if not, and she wished to
return, he would pay expenses, loss ol
lime, etc.
When Sandy Alpin had finished read
ing the letter of instructions, he slowly
removed Ids spectacles, muttered to hints
self, ‘The lad (Ibscoffespnnd&it. who was
thirty years old) is duff; he tells me to
send him a wife, as if she were a b rrrel o’
*a’t herrings; gude kens, the sash (trouble)
1 was to get a wife for invsel*. I’ll see
what the guile wife seys,’ ( bright idea.)
Next day Mrs. McAlpin sat in council
Mrs. A. and B. Invitations were sent to
ten matrons, whose daughters were in
and out of teens, to assemble at Mrs. Me
—Atpi"’ s teaboard. Each matron was re
quested to bring with her a daughter who
was not ‘o’er young to Marry yet.’ All
being present an hour before tea, Mr.
McAlpin read the letter, and made an ex
planation. They ilten sat down to tea.
Alter tea each lass gave in her ultimatum,
when it was found that only three were
willing to accept the offer. These three
agreed to draw lots to decide the prefer
ence. Mary Robinson drew the longest
straw, and was hailed as the hottny bride.
In ten days thereafter they set sail for
America. They entered Chesapeake
U iy after a voyage of twelve weeks, and
in two days more they were in Janie.
River. Wnen Mr. Crawford our hero,
heard of the arrival of the ship, lie, with
four servants, rep tired to the wharf. Ma
ry was standing on the quarterdeck, ad
mit iu>c Natures wildest grandeur. Site
had recovered from her sea->drkiies when
four days out. The healthful hreei-s of
the broad JfYturtSo had imprinted on her
pretty Lee a beauiitul freshness. There
site stood, her cheek tinged with the roses
of Sharon, and her bonny brow white a
the lilly of the valley. Crawford sprang
on deck and was introduced by the cap
tain. He looked on Mary with love and
admiration; her soft hand lay in his; lie
was shot!
They all descended from the ship, and
repaired to the mansion of the widow
aforesaid. On the thirtieth day of proba
tion, the lovers were united in ilie holy
hoods ol wedlock. In conclusion, the
sprightly though venerable widow re
marked, that a happier couple were nev-
together.

Cuming home rather late on Sunday
