Knights of Labor.
The following is clipped from the
Globe and Lance, the'*organ of the
Knights of Labor, published at Au
gusta, Ga:
In venturing thus boldly into the
arena of journalism, we acknowledge,
with all humility, our unworthiness
to the post assigned, and admit that
we take the step with some hesitancy,
and a great deal of fear and tremb
ling. Yet there abides within us a
conviction that the cause which we
espouse, and the destined-to-be
great Order, into whose guidance we
entrust our craft, will meet with such
a response from all lovers of human
rights and human justice, as to
eventually anchor us in a horn of
safety.
The human heart is a fearfully and
wonderfully made thing, and there be
those who would promulgate the doc
trine that it was the home of all evil,
and the fountain source of malignity,
cruelty’, oppression and tyranny, as
well as the receptacle of all villainy
and baseness. We, on the contrary,
believe, and we thank God for the
faith that is in us, that it is the ex
ception to find a really’ debased and
malignant heart. Few of us are
altogether so dark as we are painted.
Therefore we lay down the proposi
tion, that while “prejudice or igno
rance may, for a time, keep in the
background, that sympathy which is
the life-blood of all enterprises such
as ours, yet a truthful, candid, and
full account of our honest intentions,
will be listened to with patience, and
judged of on its merits. It is the
purpose of the Globe and Lance, to
place before the eyes of an intelligent
and an impartial public, the aims and
intentions of the Order known as
Knights of Labor, and to ask only '
that justice and patience toward them,
which is so readily accorded similar
•organizations, whose lists are headed
by the names of the rich and power-1
ful of the earth. As we represent a
body of Working Men, men who
literally obey the Biblical injunction
and earn their bread by the sweat of
their brows, our chief aim shall be to
advance, elevate and and encourage
onward this class especially and we
shall watch with an argus eye and
endeavor to protect with all our
power, any encroachments on their
rights, or any usurpation of their
prerogatives. We believe with the
framers of our American Magna
Charts, that all men are born free and
equal, and because of birth or acci
dent, luck or close trading, we should
become better filled of the flesh pots
than others, it gives with it, no right,
or supremacy over that other, simply
by reason of such sheckels. Honest
worth we maintain to be the standard
to gauge a man by, and this, the rule,
whether a leathern apron or broad
cloth and fine linen be the covering
of the form, whether a banking house
or Smithy, his place of occupation.
Be it clearly understood that we
propose to pursue the even tenor of
our course with that prudence and
conservatism, which we think is the
legitimate child of wisdom. We are
the aggressors of no man, nor any
set of men. We are not, as is er-
I roneously supposed, a body of fa
natics, arrayed, with bombsand vitriol,
the torch and dynamite, in tierce
warfare with the capitalist, the
property owner or corporation, simply
because they are such, and .to this
extent, only different from the
i “hewers of wood, and drawers of
water.” But as before stated, honest
men, seeking our own, and the ad
vancement of our fellow men, and
endeavoring to protect the laboring
men especially against the encroach
ments of unscrupulous employers, in
the gigantic labor question, now
shaking this conti-from center to
circumference. The hearty light
hand of good fellowship is extended
to all men of all trades, or vocations,
of all creeds, and of all opinions In
a word, while we can and will be very
pronounced in such views as we may
honestly entertain on the various
issues of the day, we | ropose to be
ultra in nothing, conservative in all
things, and keep always in sight, the
main object o f the Order we repre
sent, the bettering of the moral,
social, financial and intellectual con
dition of the Working Men of Ameri
ca. In this endeavor we earnestly
ask the co-operation of all good men.
We ask you fellow citizens, fellow
men among whom we live and move
and have our being, to assist us in
this laudable undertaking, and hold
up our hands in this honest endeavor.
We shall discountenance individual
lawlessness and violence as wrong in
every possible sense of the word.
Rioting and incendiarism shall find
no word of encouragement within
our pages, and though our chief aim
and object is directed to the especial
care of the class whose name we bear,
our hearts shall go out in brotherhood
and kindness to all mankind.
Truth, is the first law of life;
modesty, as natural to a gentleman as
cleanliness; delicacy and reserve, the
attributes of all good breeding, and
sincerity, indispensable to self-res
pect. These are the only qualifica
tions to our good graces, but these
are absolute requisites. In politics,
we are Democratic, within Democrat
ic lines, though our advocacy will al
ways be for measures rather than men.
The general principles of the Demo
cratic platform are ours from the
ramparts to the last ditch, yet there
be some customs which we think
would be more “honored in the
breach than in the observance.”
Whenever such change under our
oservation we shall not hesitate in
speaking of it, and to the point.
For the rest, we merely ask a kind
patience from the public, a little
sympathy from the lovers of human
right and justice, and so we flaunt
our little banner to the breeze of
morning, hopeful of its future, and
sanguine of its success, bidding it
God-speed on its errand of mercy.

MARMOII.
Sparta, Ga., Sept, 22,1885.—T0 the
Constitution, Atlanta, —Were I to
prutice deception in a case like this, I
would think that my heart had be
come seared beyond recognition.
To be guilty of bearing false testi
mony, thereby imperilling the lives of
my fellow-tm n, would place me
beneath the dignity of a gentleman .
The facts winch I disclose are en
dorsed and vouched for by the cutn
munity in which I live, and I trust
they may avert the influence intend
ed.
For twenty long years I have
suffered untold tortures from n terri
ble pain and weakness in the small of
my back, uhich resisted all modesand
manner of treatment.
For a long time the horrifying
pangs of an eating cancer of my
lower lip has added to my misery and
suffering. This encroaching, burning
and painful sore on my lip was pro
nounced Epithelial Cancer by the
prominent physicians in this section,
which stubbornly resisted the best
medical talent. About eighteen
months ago a cutting, piercing pain
located in my breast, which could not
be allayed by the use of ordinary
modes of treatment.
These sufferings of misery and
prostrations became so great that, on
the 18th of last July, a leading physi
cian said that I could not live longer
than four days, and I had about given
up in despair. The burning and ex
cruciating ravages of the cancer, the
painful condition of my back and
breast, and the rapid prostration of
my whole system combined to make
me a mere wreck of former manhood.
While thus seemingly suspended
on a thread between life and death, I
commenced the use of B. B. 8., the
grandest blood medicine, to me and
my household, ev r used.
The effect was wonderful—it was
magical. The excruciating pains
which had tormented me by day and
by night for twenty years were' soon
held in abeyance, and peace and
comfort were restore I to a suffering
man, the cancer commenced healing,
strength was imparted to my feeble
frame, and when eight bottles had
been used I was one of the happiest of
men, and felt about as well as I ever
did.
All pain had vanished, the cancer
on my lip healed, and I was pronounc
ed cured. To those who are afflict
ed, and need a blood remedy, I urge
the use of B. B. B. as a wonderfully
effective, speedy and cheap blood
purifier.
Allen Grant.
Sparta, Ga., September 22, 1885.
I saw Mr. Allen Grant, when he was
suffering with epithelial cancer of
under lip, and after using the B. B.
B. medicine, as stated above, I find
him now almost if not perfectly cured.
Signed, J. T. Andrews, M. D.
Sparta, Ga , September 22, 1885.
We take pleasure in certifying to the
truth of the above statement, having
supplied the patient with the Blood
Balm.
Signed, Rozier <k Vardeman, Drug
gists.
Sparta, Ga., September 22, 1885.
I often saw Mr. Allen Grant when
suffering from epithelioma, and from
the extent of the cancer thought he
would soon die. He now appears
perfectly well, and I consider it a most
wonderful cure.
