A Carnival of Blood.
Four Murders iu South Carolina in Three
Days.
The Augusta Evening News of the
6th inaL, says: The Charleston Courier
of this morning brings the details of
four bloody murders which have oc
curred in that State within the last
three days.
It opens the bloody chapter with an
account of the killing in Edgefield
county, in the Mine Creek, last Satur
day, of John Robertson by Charles
Anderson, two respectable white
farmers. Two months ago they fell
out about some stock and had fre
quent quarrels. At last they appoint
ed Saturday to meet at a certain place
in the public road and “shoot it out.”
They both went armed with shot guns.
Robertson first srav Anderson and
fired, hitting him with two shots. The
latter then rushed upon his enemy
and literally shot him to pieces. He
claims self-defence and surrendered
His own wounds are quite serious.
THE CONNELLY-STEEPLY MURDER.
Full particulars have been printed
regarding the killing in Barnwell
county on Sunday of Mr. John Steed
ly by Miss Connelly, /kt the investi
gation it was shown that she Avalked
up behind her victim and shot him in
the back. Steedly lived about ten
minutes. Miss Connelly with her
father is now at the Dowliug House
iu Barnwell, and declines to say any
thing. She seems to be perfectly
calm and not in the least excited. She
voluntarily put herself into the cus
tody of a trial justice. The cause of
the shooting is supposed to be the
reports circulated by Steedly reflect
ing upon the honor of Miss Connelly,
but rumors are afloat to the effect
that certain letters, which have not
yet been made public, may have been
the immediate cause. The inquest
Avas held by Justice D. J. Rowe yes
terday morning. The verdict, avi s
that the deceased came to his death
from a gunshot wound inflicted by
Miss Emma Connelly. Quiet reigns
at Hunter's Chapel, and public senti
ment seems to be with Miss Connelly.
The affair is very much regretted by
the friends of both parties.
SEVERING THE JUGULAR VEIN.
Yesterday morning, in Abbeville,
just before day, Spencer Cothran and
Henry Allen, both colored, had a
difficulty about Spencer’s wife. In
the altercation Cothran cut Allen in
the right side of the neck, severing
the jugular vein and penetrating an
inch into the right lung. Allen died
soon afterwards, and the deputy
sheriff, who went to arrest Cothran,
found him hoeing. As soon as Coth
ran was informed that he was wanted,
he willingly folloAved the deputy, and
was lodged in jail. He did not know
that Allen was dead when found at
work. It is claimed that Cothran
acted in self defense.

On Saturday evening, in Bennetts
ville, about 8 o’clock, Zack Quick was
killed by Wheeler and Allison Jacobs,
brothers, being cut in fifteen places
with knives. The murder occurred
at the house of Wheeler Jacobs, iu the
Sand Hills, near the State line. All
Avere drinking. The coroner held an
inquest Sunday and both the Jacobs
Avere arrested that night and lodged
in jail yesterday morning. Quick was
a peaceable and quiet man Avhen

white and Indian.
I Thirst for Drink.
i
A P»osntl,»i| lluskinl Drinks fh»‘ Whiskey
Prescribed for His Dying Wife-
Athens Banner Watchman: There
recently reached our ears a story
almost too horrible to believe, and
j yet it comes from a reliable source,
i There lived in Athens an old couple,
i all children married off'. The wife
j was a worthy, Christian woman, but
, the husband was a confirmed drunk
: ard, whose thirst for whisky was
' insatiate. Ho would pawn his soui
J for a drink, and every dollar he
' earned went to the bar-keeper. At
' last the wife was taken serio .sly sick
and her life was iu a critical condi
tion. Her physician prescribed
whisky for treatment, and as the old
people were without means, a son-in
law gave the husband enough money
jto buy a gallon of liquor, lie went
down iu Oglethorpe county, to a man
' who is dealing out the ardent in
defiance of prohibition, and purchns
ed a gallon of whisky. "While the
temptation to taste it was strong upon
the old man, he restrained his ap
petite until near home, when he
decided to steal only a swallow.
This only whetted his thirst, and
when he staggered in the room where
his sick wife lay, he was beastly
drunk. For two days he laid on the
floor in this condition, with that jug
hugged to his breast, and on awaken
ing from his stupor would at once
begin to drink again. In the mean
time his poor wife lay upon her bed
with no one to attend to her wants,
while her besotted husband was
rolling like a beast upon the floor,
selfishly drinking up the whiskey
that was to restore her to life. The
neighbors knew nothing of what was
going on. In the meantime, the poor
woman, through sick and neglect,
died unattended and uncared for.
After two days’ time some person
chanced to pass, and discovered the
husband drunk upon the floor, while
the poor old woman was lying dead
upon her bed.
On Saturday night during a thun
der storm the residence of Mr. Joe.
Coppedge, in Barnesville, was struck
by lightning, which tore up the front
of his house and the plastering on
the inside; knocked the back out of a
washstand without damage to the
bowl and pitcher thereon. No one
was hurt.
Eleven illicit distillei ies have Deen
captured in Heard county this
year.
Joe. O’Kelley, of Madison county,
killed a chicken snake near his house
a few days since, that measured 7 feet
in length.

A Gentleman Who Has Reached the Proph
et’s Age.
JAMES C. DUNLAP.
Almost three score years and ten have pass -
ed over the head of .Tames C. Dunlap: the
fr osts of seventy winters have served to
whiten his lock's, and the warmth and
gladness of as many summers have pre
served in him their' geniality and friendly
spirit. Man’s allotted time of life has been
given him and he is yet as hale and as
hearty as 'if he was prepared to double
the prophet’s age. He lives at 264 East
Cain Street, Atlanta, with his worthy wife
and family.
“My wife has,” said Mr. Dunlap, recently
“for the past three years been a great suffer
er from rheumatism. The disease attacked
her in the sciatic form, and caused her tenable
suffering. She was tortured almost all the
time, although we did everything in our power
to alleviate her pains. The disease appeared
to have a firm hold upon her, and last summer
and fall she suffered the most excruciating
painsand agony. Her system offered little or
no resistance to the ravages of this disease
We almost despaired of relieving her of its
clutches, and it was with heavy hearts and
little faith we began the use of Hunnicutt’s
Rheumatic Cure, at the earnest solicitation of
our friends last December. The effect nt the
medicine was almost miraculous. She began
to improve at almost the first dose, and
although at this time she has only taken three
I bottles, I can truthfully say that thousands of
i dollars would not express the good it has
' accomplished for her. Her rheumatic pains
| and twinges have entirely disappeared. It is
certainly a wonderful remedy, and I desire to
! be put ripon record assaying that any person
| who allows a friend to suffer from the ravages
of disease when a specific of this kind can be
procured from anv drug store of this broad
land of ours, at the trifling price of one dollar
a Isittlc, within the reach of even the poorest,
is naught but a criminal." Manufactured by

BI T THE HEART THROBS OF TRI E
'lllllOOll.
Sparta, Ga., Sept, 22,1885. —To the
Constitution, Atlanta, —Were I to
pratice deception in a case like this. I
would think that my'heart had be
come soared beyond recognition.
To be guilty of bearing false testi
mony, thereby imperilling the lives of
my fellow-men, would place me
beneath the dignity of a gentleman.
The facts which I disclose are en
dorsed and vouched for by the cum
munity in which I live, and I trust i
tliev inaA avert the influence intend
ed.'
For twenty long years I have
suffered untold tortures from a terri
hie pain and weakness in the small of I
my back, which resisted all modes and
manner of treatment.
For a long time the horrifying
pangs of an eating cancer of my
lower li] has added to iny misery and
suffering. This encroaching, burning
and painful sore on my lip was pro
nounced Epithelial Cancer l>y the
prominent physicians in this section,
which stubbornly resisted the best
medical talent. About eighteen i
months ago a cutting, piercing pain |
located in my breast, which could not :
be allayed by the use. of ordinary ’
modes of treatment.
These sufferings of misery ami
prostrations became so great that, on
the 18th of last July, a leading physi
cian said that I could not live longer
than four days, and I had about given ‘
up in despair. The burning and ex
cruciatiug ravages of the cancer, the |
painful condition of my back and
breast, and the rapid prostration of
my whole system combined to make
me a mere wreck of former manhood.
While thus seemingly suspended
on a thread between lite and death, I
commenced the use of B. B. 8., the
grandest blood medicine, to mo and
my household, ev.r used.
The effect was wonderful—it was
magical. The excruciating pains
which had tormented me by day and
by night for twenty years were soon
held in abeyance, and peace and
comfort were restore I to a suffering
man, the cancer commenced healing, ’
strength was imparted to my feeble
frame, and when eight bottles had
been used I Avas one of the happiest of
men, and felt about as well as I ever
did.
All pain had vanished, the cancer
on my lip healed, and I was pronounc
ed cured. To those who are, afflict
ed, and need a blood remedy, I urge
the use of B. B. B. as a wonderfully
effective, speedy and cheap blood
purifier.
Allen Grant.
Sparta, Ga., September 22, 1885
I saw Mr. Allen Grant, when he was
suffering with epithelial cancer of
under lip, and after using the B. B.
B. medicine, as stated above, I find
him now almost if not perfectly cured.
Signed, J. T. Andrews, M. D.
Sparta, Ga , September 22, 1885.
VVe take pleasure in certifying to the
truth of the above statement, having
supplied the patient with the Blood
Balm.
Signed, Rozier & Vardeman, Drug
gists.
Sparta, Ga., September 22, 1885.
I often saw Mr. Allen Grant when
suffering from epithelioma, and from
the extent of the cancer thought he
would soon die. He now appears
perfectly well, and I consider it a most
wonderful cure.
