EDITORIAL NOTES.
The day* of IKMi are well nipt
numbered, yet the record i* going on.
What iait?
The trial of Mr Hobt Jones for the
killing of the Pressleys, will take
place at Edgefield, S. C , next week.
A young lady in Henry county
recently picked 100 pounds of cotton
In two hour*. Young men, that s tin
kind of a wife to get.
Sparta Islimat lite . Some of the '
corn exhibited at the Hancock fair,
last w ek, could t have been beat in (
»gy pt in the days of Joseph.
An Atlanta lawyer has interested '
himaelf in the case of T. J. < luverius
t the extent of writing Gov. Lee a
very impressive letter in behalf of the
condemned man.
The Gibson Enterprise is given to
waving good things and here is one <4
them: Some folks think a few words
of meager praise enough pay for theii
paper. We think well enough of the
praise but wo find more use f< r
money.
President Cleveland has ap|s>inlcd
the 35th of November as a day of
prayer and thanksgiving. Ho also
makes appropriate reference to tin
calamities of the year His proclanm
tion should be heeded and a general
thanksgiving offered.

By the result of the recent election
in this State iteomes within the power
of the Ijegislat ure to grant aid to ex-
Confederate soldiers who were dis
abled by the war though they may not
have lost a limb. The Legislature
should at once grant such aid, and
the State never did a better act than
to give it

Judge J. S. Hook has retired ns a
candidate against Judge H. (' Honey,
for the Judgeship of this circuit.
From present indications it appears
that Judge Boney will be elected
without opposition. No man in the
State has more faithfully or fearlessly
discharged the responsible position
for the past four years than Judge It.
The Gibson Enterprise publishes a
harratigue from John A. Cargile to
the Advent preachers. If Cargile will
tramp back to bis native country the
people in thia part of the world can
get along well without his new fang
led diwtrines. At least the infelli
gent part of them are willing to try
it.
It may Mein a little strange, and
yet it is true, that while a sung little
sum can soon Is- raised to assist some
religious enterprise nt a distance,
it would require considerable effoit
to collect one-fourth the amount to
help an enterprise of the same charac
ter al home. To un it is a strange
charity that sees necessities at a dist
ance while it is blind to those at its
own door.
The editor of this department has
been very nick for the past week. He
gratefully acknowledges expressions
of kindness and sympathy from n host
of friends during the time. Such
tokens are lasting mementoes that
•parkle upon the pages of life’s history
and are calculated to make one feel
that there are still left in tins sin
cursed world, warm hearts and im
pulse* of Christian love.
At the receiving of cross ties, on
thia section of the Georgia Railroad,
a few days ago a number of contract
or* received a “black eye,'' on tic
count of ties not coming up to speci
fication* The greater numlx-r of
contractors or sub-contractors are
farmers and they devote a great deal
of time to the buri near We have
been of the opinion for quite n while
that there is, on account of the small
price paid for ties, very little protit
ta the buainess, and that if they
would turn their attention to some
else for a few years it would
•Mutually necessitate the paying of
better price* for such timber. \V<

Well siid by the Savannah New*:
The anti-prohibitionists will not admit
that any good can possibly come from
prohibition, and they will bilk against
it as long M they can get anybody to
listen to them. They ought to be
convinced by this time, however, that
Atlanta is fixed for prohibition, for
two years nt least, mid that there is a
strong probability that nt the »nd of
flint time the town will be more
strongly against w hisky than it is now
It is a fact worth noticing ill this
connection that all the counties of
the State which have given prohibi
tion n fair trial couldn’t oe induced to
abolish it. They arc more prosper
ous than ever before, and the people
aie happier and far more contented.
Why shouldn't the same condition of
affairs exist in Atlanta?
Juke M. Stanley reports that he lias
gathered, this year, from <l| acres in
corn 268 J bushels From 11 acres
in cotton he has picked 12,388 Jis, I
already, with nt least 2,000 lbs. in the
field. We call this good farming
The redemption of the agricultural
interests of the county, if it ever
come from farming at all, will come 1
