The news carried on the front page of The Progress last week concern ing the cotton mill was very in,'.cr esting to Ihe peop'e of this communi ty. And it also shows that the edit or of The Progress is very much on the job and is a go getter in getting news, especially when it is something important and pertains to the wel fare of Thomson, as we believe the above mentioned is. Did you read your Progress last week? Mr. and Mrs. B. Proctor visited relatives at Bath, S. C., last Friday and also carried Mrs. Ruby Proctor and Master Sam Proctor along with them. Mrs. Ruby Proctor and her husband will make their future home in Bath. Noticed the sailor boy back again the other day. He called at the home of Mr. Charles McGahee. Wonder why? Mrs. S. W. Geeter called on Mrs. Nan Hodo Monday evening. Rev. and Mrs. R. P. Gill attended services at the Baptist church Sun day night. Mr. and Mrs. I. A. Hartley spent the week-end at the home of Mrs. Hartley’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jones, near Sweetwater. Had a nice crowd at Sunday School Sunday evening. The center of population in 1920 was 1.9 miles west of Whitehall, Clay Township, Owen Cqunty Indi ana. It moved westward 9.8 miles from the preceding census period of 1910. In the year 1880 the center of population was 8 miles from Cincin- natti, Ohio. It left the Ohio bound- ry before 1890 and proceeded on its westward march across to Indiana. The chances are that it will be over line into Illinois within the next 25 years. The center of population hov ered in the vicinity of Baltimore and Washington from 1790 to 1810. One hundred years ago it situated near Moorefield, West Virginia, (then Vir ginia). In 1800, and at the out break of the Civil War, Chillicothe, Ohio, was the nearest point of im portance to the center of population. There seems to be a good deal of popular mystery about these “slides.” The canal (pierces great hills in places. In wet weather these hills give way loose dirt just as the sides of a deep railway cut let their sands down upon the tracks. In the cases of the railways and at Panama the only thing to be done is to shovel out the dirt. After awhile the hills will find their equilibrium and quit interferring with the traffic. ♦ V Q.
