FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 1921. the McDuffie progress, thoms », ON STEADY BASTS Head Of South's Largest Realty Com pany Defines Pace of t^custry On First Lapse Of ear. Rural Mail Carr* rg Will Help F^rners Atlanta, Gu., Feb. 1 l.—Pace at which industry is moving n( bo pres ent time is slightly less impressive than it wo year a;.co. But it must be acccpte iat friction is far less this v 'ar than last, and as a result of thi act the 1924 business machine is better fitted to stand up under the wear and tear of the year’s long drive. This is the opinion of Forrest Adair, Sr., president of the Adair Realty and Trust Company of At lanta, and probably one of the best informed men on business conditions in the South. The fundamental working part* which proved so successful last year are still in good order, Mr. Adair says. In other words, those controll ing factors which made 1929 a record year have been carried over into 1924. Undoubtedly, as Mr. Adair showB, one of the biggest single factors has been the universal conservatism among those charged with the re sponsibility of carrying on business. Atlanta, Ga., Feb. 14.—The Senate Postoffice Committee, news received here states, has unanimously ordered a favorable report on the bill of U. S. Senator W. J. Harris, of Georgia, to cut the parcel post rates on farm products on rural routes, and pay a commission to the mail carrier for the special service. The experiment will be tried out under the direction of the Postmaster General on fifty routes, for 12 months, and a report made to Congress. Senator Harris says it will mean much to the small farmer in be'ng able to rend such items as eggs, but ter and other products to market without making a special trip which would cost more than the products were worth. Now the Carey factories get their Asbestos direct from Carey owned mines. They use Asphalt and Slate in many products and in enormous quantities, enabling them to buy at minimum prices. They manufacture their own felts. Turning out millions of dollars’ worth of roll roofing annually makes it possible to employ cost saving methods not possible in a smaller plant. You get the benefit in lower prices. So we offer you roll roofings at a wide range of price, to afford whatever length of service you wish to get at the lowest possible cost for that service. There are Slate sur faced, Mica surfaced and Rock surfaced roll roofings and Asbestos Built-up roofs, each to meet a particular need. <•> Thomson Hdw. Co. Thomson, Ga. 55-A ASK SQUARE DEAL FOR RAILROADS Atlanta, Ga., Feb. 14.—Business men here are urging that the rail roads be given a fair opportunity to fully adjust themselves to the re quirements of the present national transportation act without being handicapped by further tampering. Certain men, influential in national politics, it is pointed out here, are sponsors of the propaganda that the nation’s railroad^ are seriously “sick” and need strenuous “doctor ing.” Atlanta bankers, business men, manufacturers and others who have discussed the subject say the facts do not warrant the foregoing con tentions. In spite of the super-regu- lation already imposed by 99 regu latory bodies, it is claimed, the rail roads have lifted themselves out of the alleged pitiable condition which government operation thrust upon them and, within three years, it is asserted, have regained a state of comparative health. Figures made public here show j that in 1922 the railroads spent on new equipment and other facilities 140 million dollars. This year they have authorized the expenditure of an additional one billion and hundred million. Today, it is further shown,, tho railroads are hauling more freight than ever before in their history. They are doing it, Atlanta executives point out ,with two hundred thou sand fewer men, whose individual wages average about $200 per an num more than under Federal con trol. And they are hauling this freight, it is claimed, at a cheaper rate, as compared with wholesale prices, than before the war. More service at less cost by a billion dol lars a year, it is declared. Yet, in the face of these fats, At lanta executives claim, men confess edly unskilled in railroading, main tain that the railroads need addi tional “cures,” and they are promot ing their “remedies” under the popu lar label of “further regulation of the railroads.” It is time to call a halt, in the opinion of business men here.
