INDUTRIAL 1’ -irate Instruction. One tiny match, lighted in a pri vate garage recently, gave a S3,000 lesson in fire prevention to a Seattle motorist. While working on his car the me. i dinned a tool and struck a match to look for it; an explosion and fire immediately owed in which garage and car were destroy ed and the owner injured. Costly tuition certainly, but the lesson prob ably will not have to be repeated. A Costly “Gift.” Under Secretary of the Treasury Winston says government actuary figures on total cost of bonus, allow ing for expected percentage of selec tion between various options and probable cash borrowings, will be over $5,000,000,000, of which $1,000,- 000,000 comes in first four years. It would take an average of $21L000,- 000 a year to meet payments and sinking funds for first twenty years. With this increased burden of tax ation, it would be interesting to know what proportion of his own bonus every ex-service man would have to pay through increased income taxes or other taxes during the twenty- year period. Telephones Indicate Growth Of Country. The growth of this country and general industrial activity is shown by the continued demand for the service furnished by electric light, power, gas and telephone companies. A specific illustration is the Ameri can Telephone and Telegraph Com pany and associated companies. 1923 was the record-breaking year for the system, when it expended over $240,- 000,000 to enlarge and improve its service. The 1924 prog-am for the system will require about $270,000,000 for plant additions. These expenditures will be approximately $45,000,000 for land and buildings, $95,000,000 for central office switchboards and equip ment, $35,000^000 for telephones and other equipment on subscribers’ premises, and $90,000,000 for out side plant facilities. These enormous expenditures are to take care of new business and will be distributed over every section of the country in line with the uniform policy adopted by the Bell system. It is expected there will be an in crease of fifteen per cent in Bell telephones over 1923. J. G. IVEY’S GARAGE Formerly Ivey’s Garage. Prepared to do quick and first class work on all makes of cars. The term “superpower” seems to confuse many people as to its mean ing. Superpower is nothing new, nor is it anything mysterious. It is simply a term that has been applied to the long-distance transmission of electric energy through the connec tion of power facilities in adjoining communities or adjoining states. In other words, by the soluton of prob lems which were involved in the transmission of electricity over long distances it has been possible for power plants in various sections of the country so to connect their trans mission lines that the output from one state can be drawn upon by the lines in another state when necessity requires, either through a breakdown in local facilities or by demand for unusual amounts of power to meet unexpected emergencies. Thus by coupling up the power plant facilities of various sections so that energy developed at one point can be used at another point, reser voirs of power have been created by utilities thus utilizing to fullest de gree existing power facilities of the country. Such power connections virtually eliminate the possibility of power shortage in any community due to temporary breakdown of equipment or damage caused by floods, .fires or other disasters. Superpower is sim ply an enlargement of service such as the modern utility is constantly striving to render. Those who wish to sell are advised to act at once in order that we may have as large an assortment as possible when inquiries begin to come in. The price at which your land is listed will be the price asked the prospect. Do not list your land at a higher price than it will bring, because this will discourage buyers at the start. The White Man’s Burden. Public ownership of public utilities and operation of the same without profit is a beauiful dream, but few people stop to think what it might mean. The cities have their hands full now managing, finaneng, taxing themselves and raising money to handle all that is expected of them under present conditions. They must pave streets, build sewers, maintain parks, clean streets, conduct public schools, employ police and fire departments, and support hospitals and jails. Add to this the management of street railroads, telephone systems, gas plants, electric lighting, chil dren’s playgrounds, municipal dance halls, public auditoriums, golf links, and numerous other things proposed, and you double the taxpayer’s burd ens.
