USTOMERS tell us Philco is a big value in
roll roofing, that it exceeds the lifetime ex
pected of it.
People who have it on their old buildings buy
it for their new ones; that is why our sales of this
roofing are growing rapidly and steadily.
See Philco Roofing or write for a sample. Make
Comparisons with any roofing of equal weight and
price and you will understand why we like to rec
ommend it to those who look to us for advice
about roofing.

Q. What foods besides bread
should be eaten without the use of
knife, fork, or spoon?
A. Crackers and small cakes, corn
on the cob, and artichokes all are
eaten with the fingers, as are also
fruits, raisins, candies and nuts. Cel
ery, radishes and olives are also eaten
with the fingers. The fingers may
be used to pull apart lobster claws
and to peel and eat shrimps when
served whole in their shells.

Q. IIow many workmen were
there employed in the building of the
Temple of King Solomon and how
many years were they engaged in
the building of it?
A. King Solomon’s Temple was
built in seven years. “There were
employed in its building three Grand
Masters; 3,300 Oversteers of Grand
Masters of the Work; 80,000 Fellow
Crafts, and 70,000 Entered Appren
tices. All of these so classed and
arranged by King Solomon that nei
ther envy, discord nor confusion
were suffered to interrupt that uni
versal peace hnd tranquility which
pervaded the world at this important
period.

Q. What is a calumet?
A. Besides being the name of a
city and some copper mines it is
essentially the pipe of peace of the
North American Indian. When the
Indians devoted themselves exclus
ively to pipes, and had not learned
of cigarettes or cigars, the pipe of
peace was very important in their
tribal relations. To accept the prof
fered pipe of peace was an act of
friendship ,and many treaties were
ratified by smoking the tobacco from
stone bowls. To refuse the proffer
of the pipe of peace was an act of
enmity, and sometimes led to. wars.

Q. In the measurement of time
what is meant by “sun fast” and "sun
slow"?
A. Time as marked "sun fast” is
also time that is “apparent." “Sun
slow” is “mean time.” The sun dial
will always record “sun fast.” The
'Calculations of most almanacs are
given in “mean” or clock time.

Q. What is meant by Committee
of the Whole?
A. It is a committee of all the
individual members of the House of
Representatives, or other legislative
bodies. When the House considers
a question in committee of the whole
a chairman is selected from its mem
bership and he replaces the Speaker
while the session lasts. The pro
ceeding is similar to that carried on
in small committee groups. When
the committee of the whole arrives
at a decision, the chairman leaves
the rostrum and the Speaker as
sumes the gavel. The regular legis
lative session is then resumed, where
upon the chairman reports the de
cision of the committee of the whole.

Q. What is superpower?
A. It is a new word that has not
broken into the dictionaries. Super
is “an unusually large or powerful
thing.” Therefore superpower is un
usual power. It is obtained through
the interconnection, or joining of
several power producing plants. The
word has been used in official and
engineering reports for several years.

Q. What is the present population
of the city of Washington? What
per cent of it is colored? Describe
the form of government. What pro
portion of municipal revenue does the
Federal Government contribute. When
were the people of the District of
Columbia disenfranchised and under
what pretext?
A. The last census gave Wash
ington a population of 437,000, of
which 110,000 were colored. These
figures have likely increased slight
ly. The city municipality is distinct
ive in the fact that the government
is by the Congress directly as to leg-
slation, and by three executive Com
missioners named by the President
of the United States, confirmed by
the Senate. Each house of Congress
has a committee on the District of
(Columbia, and taxation current and
for improvements is borne half by
Congress and half by the people lo
cally. On February 21, 1871, Con
gress revoked the charter of the cor
porations of the cities of Washing
ton and Georgetown, and establish
ed a single municipal government,
named the District of Columbia. This
was the first legal action officially
creating the District. In 1874 au
thority in the District was vested in
the Commissioners. The present
form of government was finally
whipped into shape in 1878. Resi
dents of the District of Columbia
were at that time deprived of the
right to vote for national oT.cers, or
on other matters of national concern
under the theory that a!! territorial
rights had been ceded to tH United
States which became the seat of the
general government, or the “Federal
City.” Under the theory that local
politics should be subjected to the
soft pedal all rights of franchise
were surrendered by the citizens.
Doubtless a great many conditions
were to be feared through too free
exercise of political rights by citi
zens of such a district government.
At the present time due to the growth
of the city and country, an effort is
being made to secure elective repre
sentatives from the district to the
Senate and House. A good deal has
been said about the condition being
traceable to a desire to repress the
colored population, both socially and
politically. There is undoubtedly a
basis of truth in this suspicion but
it has never been the controlling fac
tor in the consideration.

Q. What was the area of Palestine
in the time of our Savior?
A. According to records of the
Ottoman Empire in the period of
Selim I, in 1516, the area at the time
of Jesus Christ was 1200 square
miles.
