A Note From Dr. Twitty
The results of the election held in
Baker County December 13 makes it
necessary that another election be held
in order that a County Superintend
ent of Schools, and some other offi
cers, be voted for again, thereby
making it possible for a majority of
the citizens of the county to say whom
they want for the officers in question.
January 10, 1940, is the date set for
this election.
In presenting myself as one of the
candidates for the office of County
Superintendent of Schools, I feel that

I should indicate to the citizens of the
county my position regarding some
of the issues of general interest and
concern. Therefore, I wish to let it
be known that I favor, and, if elected,
will use my influence to uphold the.
following:
1. To have available all text books
i needed at the opening of the schools.
2. Distribution in advance by the
; Superintendent of all record books
and blanks necessary so that prompt
■ reports can be made by the teachers
; and others required to make formal
; reports to the County Board of Edu
cation, in order that all claims against
the Board may be audited and ap
; proved promptly and thus be in line
I for payment at the earliest practi
j cable date.
3. All reports required of the
| County Superintendent by the State
Department of Education to be made
I promptly so that there may be the
least possible delay in the receipt of
available funds from the State, and
in payment of claims against the
County Board of Education by teach-
! ers and others.
4. Frequent visits to schools by the
I Superintendent and plans for contact
between the Superintendent and
teachers or others having business
with the Superintendent.
5. Every school in the county, in
so far as is possible and practicable,
1 to do work in the grades taught in
| the several schools, in keeping with
' the standard set up by the State De
partment of Education.
| 6. Supervised physical training for
। pupils as recommended by the State,
and at least the minimum in equip
ment for such purposes in all- schools.
7. Early and equitable distribution
of NYA aid.
8. The longest term of school pos
! sible in keeping with the standards of
; the State and that available funds will
; permit.
। I take peculiar pride in the system
jof schools as maintained in Baker
■ County. They were developed to their
I present standard during my term of
! office as former Superintendent. Cer
| tainly every effort will be made by
I me to maintain these schools as they
i now are and to increase in every pos

of our young people.

TRANSPLANTING OF
TREES AND SHRUBS
ADVISED BY AGENT
Transplanting of woody plants, such
as trees and shrubs, may be done dur
ing the winter months, County Agent
N. D. Mcßainey reminded Baker
county farmers this week.
“If plants grown in a nursery row
are used, there is very little chance of
loss, due to the compact root tystem,”
i the agent pointed out. “Most trees
and shrubs found in the woods and
wanted for transplanting, are grow
ing in competition with other plants,
l thereby causing the root system to be
I widespreading.
“When these plants are taken up,
1 only a few root stubs come with the
I stems, the feeding roots being' left in
j the ground. It is wise to take as much
soil as possible with the roots, and,
by all means, be sure to protect the
roots from the drying influence of
sun and wind.”
Mr. Mcßainey said that many
plants found in the woods are spind
ling and ill-shaped. For this reason,
he said it is important to cut back
the tops of the plant near the sur
face of the ground, and transplant
only the roots and crowns.
“Severe pruning of trees and shrubs
,at planting time means a saving of
moisture for the plant by preventing
excesive less which takes place when
there are many small twigs and leaves
left on the plant,” he pointed out.
The agent also advised the selection

of small trees and shrubs for trans

ing is less for a small plant, and will
make a better-shaped tree or shrub,
since it will become established sooner.
“A tree one inch in diameter with
its natural branching is more desirable

there is less chance of the smaller
shrub dying,” he added.
