Journal Editor Making Strong Fight
At Candler (general Hospital
Frank 0. Miller, editor of the Pembroke Journal and Mayor
of Pembroke, is making a strong fight for his health at Candler
General Hospital in Savannah.
He entered the hospital the middle of last month for tests
and observation and has shown considerable improvement the
past few days.
“I wasn’t 'sure I was going to make it when I first came
in here,” the Journal editor said this week, “but now I feel sure
I will be strong enough to come home, at least temporarily,
within the next few’ days.”
During his prolonged stay in the hospital, the editor has
been cheered up by the many visitors, cards and flowers which
have come -to his room 341-E at Candler General.
“I wish I could thank them all," Editor Miller said,” but I
am sure that all my friends know how much I appreciate their
interest and concern, and would like to say by this article in
my paper that I thank each and everyone of them from the
bottom of my heart. 1 have always known that Pembroke was
the Garden Spot of the World that the people of Bryan County
are the greatest anywhere.”
Among the more recent visitors to come to see Editor Miller
was his son W. 0. (Bill) Miller from Seattle, Wash., where he
is Public Relations Director of Lookheed Shipbuilding and Con
struction Company.
Other members of the family from out of town who were
here for the holiday weekend included: three of the Flditor’s
sisters: Mrs. B. C. McClifford of Arlington, Va.; Mrs. Frank
Smith of Valdosta, Ga. and Mrs, Lillian Miller of Washington,
D. C.
As the Journal was going to press Editor Miller said:
“Pve got the best doctors any man could have, and they tell
me if I will get my strength back, I can go home any time I
want to. I don’t want to kick about hospital food for they
probably are doing the best they can with the large number
of people they have to feed. But I know if I can get back to
Bryan County, and get some home cooking, it would be the best
thing for me in getting my strength and health back.”
“Besides,” he added, “there are many things Pve had a part
in starting as Mayor and I want to get back and see these pro
jects and plans move ahead for the good of all of us.”

Harn Introduces
Resolution To
Extend Law
At the regular monthly meet
ing of the Bryan County Com
missioners Tuesday, Dee. 2.
1969, J. Dixie Harn introduced
the following resolution:
“I'he Commissioners of Roads
and Revenues of Bryan County
Recommend to the Legislature
of the State of Georgia that a
bill be introduced to extend the
Motor Vehicle inspection Law
that before a certificate be is
sued that the exhaust system be
inspected and approved.”
Copies of the resolution are
to be sent to the Dept, of Public
Safety of Georgia and to Bry
an County’s representative and
senator.
The resolution introduced by
Commissioner Harn was unani
mously adopted in view of the
recent tragic death of two
young citizens of Bryan County
who were overcome by carbon
monoxide due to a faulty auto
mobile muffler and tail pipe.
It is understood that the
Georgia Automobile Inspection
Law does not require inspec
tion of exhaust systems. It is
hoped that the above resolution
will influence legislatures to
amend the Georgia Highway
Safety Inspection Law at their
next meeting in January, 1979.
Meeting with the Bryan
County Commissioners Tuesday
were Honorable Hines Brantley
of Metter, Bryan’s representa
tive in the General Assembly,
and Honorable Ed Zipperer, of
Chatham County, Bryan Coun
ty’s senator.

In a tragic accident Sunday
afternoon, two of ou^ young
people lost their lives due to
carbon monoxide poisoning.
About 7:45 p.m. on Sunday af
ternoon, the bodies of Harry
Strickland, age 16, and Ferra
Lane, age 14, were found in an
auto near the Bryan County
High School. They were found
by Clayton White and Randy
Ussery, who noticed the car
stopped by the side of the road,
but did not at first check on it.
When they passed by later,
they decided to check the ear,
found the engine running, and
the two bodies inside. They
summoned help immediately
and removed them from the
auto.
Taken to Savannah, the
young victims were pronounc
ed dead on arrival at Memorial
Hospital. According to the re
port of Chief M. L. Starling of
Pembroke, and other investigat
ing officers, it was found that
they had been overcome by
carbon monoxide due to a faul
ty muffler and burned off tail
pipe, which let the fumes enter
the car through the trunk and
back seat. Chief Starling said
they apparently were overcome
by the fumes while driving
home from church, and had
pulled off the road.
