Memphis, Tenn., October 20.— Judge Zach Taylor, aged 60 years, and Captain Quintin Rankin, of Trenton, Tenn., one of the most prominent attorneys in the State, were called from their hotel at Walnut Log, Tenti., 15 miles from Union City, last midnight, and this morning Captain Ran¬ kin’s body, riddled with bullets, was found hanging to a tree on the edge of Reelfoot Lake. Judge Taylor is believed to have been drowned. Another theory is that he is being held so that the Reelfoot Lake Fishihg Com¬ pany will offer a reward for his return, by agreeing to allow free fishing on Reelfoot Lake. Trouble has been brewing there over fishing privileges. Rankin and Taylor organized and represented the Reelfoot Lake Fishing Company, which leased the fishing pmileges from the West Tennessee Land Company. From Circuit Judge Harris they seeured an injunction against fishing in Reelfoot Lake without permission. Harris was twice shot at and lives in fear of assassination. Governor Patterson has offered a $10,000 reward for the assassins and is en route to Reelfoot Lake today. He may call out the State troops. He has an unconfirmed report that Taylor and Rankin Wfete acbdmpaniiid by a surveyor THE PELHAM JOURNAL, FINLAY, OPT. 3 ?, 1£08 who is also missing. The lynching is said to be the work of night riders. Later—A Tiptonville dispatch of the 21st says that Col. R. Z. Taylor has arrived there safe and sound. He escaped from the Night Riders, he says, after they fired five hundred shots at him. Is Atkinson’s Road After Albany & Northern? A persistent rumor is going the rounds to the effect that the At¬ lanta, Birmingham & Atlantic Railway is after the Albany & Northern. Whether or not there is anything in the rumor cannot be ascertained, for, as is usual in such cases, no information con¬ cerning any negotiations, it' any are under way, has been given out. The rumor is a plausible one, because of the advantage that would accrue to the A. B. <fc A. by the acquisition of the Albany & Northern by that system. The advantage that Albany would de¬ rive from such close connection with H M. Atkinson’s new road which runs between Brunswick and Birmingham and Brunswick and Atlanta would amount to the source, is circulated in circles which give a prominence and an importance which give it great significance, and those who are posted on railroad affairs believe there is something in it.
