At a time when ail that relates to Washing
ton attracts so much attention, and when his
tomb is made tlie subject cf a nation’s anxiety',
a r Ace of the birth place of tiro father ofhis
country will not be deemed inappropriate. W e
have o note from air. Cusiis, of Aldington,
winch con tains the memoranda .of Some mci

before been published.
Gen. Washington was born on a plantation
called Wakefield, now the property of John
( hxiy, Fsq. of Traveller’s Best, lying on Pope’s
Cree;;, in W estmoreland county-, Vo. The
house in which he first sa\V the light was
• : 'd yards frem the Creek, half a mile from its

duty by Samuel Lewis, Esq. great nephew of

a command in the body guard. The party
landed at W akefield bearing in their arms the
stone, encircled by the star spangled banner,
and having gathered together us much mate
rials from tlie remains of the ancient mansion
as would serve tor a rude pedestal, they depos
ited the stone thereon, with this inscription :
“ Here, the 221 of February, 1732/George
W uTi ngton was born.” The duty performed,
the party- re-embarked, and hoisting- their co
lors tired a salute from the vessel, thus eom
piolirg the interesting, and surely not unim
pressive peremoniH, of placing the first stone
of tlie monument.”
A late writer, speaking of this interesting
place, remarks:

of its being the place where one of the grea t
est and best men that e ver appeared on * this
e;4rth, first drew breath and saw the light of
heaven;'its being independent of such asso
ciation a beautiful one ; and with its proximity

to Baltimore, JNorfoik, &c.-it is surpri
sing tiiat it sliotdd he so little known and ’visi
ted. Not one in a thousand of the passengers

face ; and hid from his view only by a fringe
