“Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep.”
BY MI9B H. A. F.,
“Now I lay me down to sleep,”
And the Blue eyes, dark and deep,
Let their Bppwy curtains down, n ]
Edged with fringes golden brown.
All day long, the angels lair,
I've been watching over there;
Heav’n’s not far, ’tis just in sight
■ Now they’re calling me, good nigh t;
Kiss me, mother, do not weep.
“Now I lay me down to sleep.”
CHORUS.
Over there, just over there,
I shall say nty morning prayer;
• Kiss me, mother, do not weep,
“Now I lay me down to sleep.”
Tangled ringlets, all smooth now,
Lopped back from the waxen brow;
Little hands so dimpled, white,
Clasped together, cold to-night,
"Where the mossy, dasied sod,
Brought sweet messages from God,
Two pale lips With kisses press’d,
There we left her to her rest ;
And the dews of evening weep,
Where we laid her down to sleep.
CHOBtJS.
Over there, just over there,
List the angel’s morning prayer j
Lispiags low tliro’ fancy creep, .
“Now I lay me down to sleep.” .
Parlor Jugglery.
Our readers have doubtless noticed that many of
our magazines and' periodicals are devoting a por
tion of their space to the science of legerdemain, for
the edification of their younger friends, and for
general home and parlor amusement. One of our
exchanges, not to be behind anything with jfhk on
it, has prepared a number of tricks which will be
found not only entertaining but.instructive. In his
prefatory remarks, the perpetrator goes on to say
that in the long autumn and winter evenings they
will form a never-failing source of amusement.
They are all susceptible of explanation on natu
ral principles, and no parent can consistently object
to them on the ground that there is “sumtui’n
wrong about ’em”. The tricks are not only healthy
but perfeclty sure in their results, and thus have the
advantage over other kinds Os parlor jugglery.
The Spittoon Trick.—Take two halfgallon
spittoons—white ones are the best—then select a
strong cord—a worsted one if.it can fee procured—
pass the cord through the two holes of the spit
toons and give the ends to a getleman and lady, se
lected from the company, to hold. NOW let a lady
seize npd_ sliding es£h td thri Opposite.
"cndoFtfee cofd.'bnngthem together smartly when
they will break in pieces and fall to the floor. This
trick is easily performed and will excite considera
ble applause.
The Magic STiCK;—To do this trick propelly you
will need a pearl handled knife and a stout hard
wood stick, some two inches in length. Sharpen
the two ends of the stick and then try to crush it
end-ways, either between your hands or by sitting
upon it. This, to your astonishment, you will find
impssible to do.
Tire Fi/vino Hen.—Select a large, well fed hen —
the color is immaterial, though black is best —place
her in a sitting posture on a smooth surface. Then
over her place a pasteboard box, eighteen by tliirty
inches. Pound smartly on the box with a bone
handled table-knife for three -minutes, then sud
denly raise it, when the lien will immediately fly
away. This trick can be performed by any person
of average intelligence, who gives his whole uiind
to it.
The Nail Trick—Take two large wrought iron
nails and wire them together in the form ofu cross.
It will then be found impossible to swallow them.
There is no deception about this.
The Cable—Take a piece of tarred cable, about
fifteen inches in length cut it carefuly with a sharp
knife and then try and chew the ends together.
You can try as long as you like.
The Magic Eggs—Pnt twelve fresh eggs care
fully into a green worsted bag. Swing the bag
carefully about your head, hitting each time against
the door-post. Then ask the company whether
they will have then boiled, scrambled or fried. It
will make no difference to you which they choose.
The Four-Jacks.—Select a pack, of oards with
plain white backs. Take out the four jacks and
bum them, before the company, letting them see
the ashes. Now shuffle the cards quickly, and hold :
ing them in the left hand give them a slurp rap with
the knuckles of the right. Then place- them ou
the table face down and defy the company to find
the jacles. They can’t do it.
. These are only few of the tricks in our repertoire,
hut they will suffice for the present. They are cal
culated not only to amuse, but to inculcate a love of
science among our young friends, and we shall feel
amply repaid by their success.
The two Races.
There is no more natural or necessary political
antagonism between white man- and black men
than is fall' men and short men. But wITCh the
the laws oppress'any description of men whatever,
this oppression makes a separate class of them,
and gives them a common interest, and a common
hostility to the rest of society.
Indeed, it is a general truth, established by his
tory as well as by reason, that when two races oc
cupy the same country, every law or custom which
tends to emphasize the distinction between them is
an injury to both. It is only by making them
equal at all points before the law that society can
be made secure and progressive.
There is no .one point in winch the color of a
ltoau’s face, or the race or social standing of his
ancestors, has any relation to the law. These
s)ing3 inay have important bearings upon liis asso
ciations, friendships, alliances, both in Society and
business. They, may materially aft,ect his .own
abilities or character, and so determine his success
or failure in life; but the law , hag nothing, tp do
with tljcm. - »> •• , ■ v : -
If the law will let color alone, then color will
not trouble law. The moment the law cehses to
distinguish between different colors, that, moment,
every reason for a political alliance between men
of one color ceases. No political question can
then arise which will affect such-men as a class,
and the .problem about which po much anxiety is
now professed drops out.of notice. It.is.not solved,
for there is nothing to solve “the relations between
the two races” are no longer a subject for discus
sion, since, as races, they have no longer any rela
tions at all. Each member of each race finds his
own place in the aggregate of society-according to
liis individual worm and efficiency.
These are simple truths enough, and ought to be
easily admitted and applied, wherever men believe
in government by the people. They have-nothing
to contend against but the old prejudice of class—
the same feeling which lias so long supported in
Europe, kings by divine- right and nobles by inheri
tance; and in America, slavery. When they are
really admitted. and understood throughout this
country, all whose institutions depend upon them,
and the golden age of order ami progress will be
gin.—N. Y. Post.
. African. |
We have never understood why so many of our
people apply to themselves, their churches, their
schools the above term. It does not expreess a
truth. Very few among us are Africans —natives
of the African soil. What would be'thought of
Americans, descendants of Englishmen, who had
perhaps lived here lor generations, persisting m
calling themselves Englishmen ? Or, liow would
they liked to be so styled by their fellow-citizens V
The term, would seem to imply that they were not
patriotic Americans, and were in fact ashamed of
their native country, Why then should any of
our people, simply Because their forefathers were*
brought from Africa, cling to the name African ?
Are they not Americans— natives .of America, pit
izsens or America? Are they; ashamed of their
native land? Do they -wish to abandon It tot Af
rica ? Certainly not. Then again, many among
us have a large admixture of Anglo-Saxon blood
in our veins, iii some cases, the larger proportion.
How can such persons he called Africans ?
The whole thing is a misnomer, adopted and
kept up through thoughtlessness, but calculated in
many ways to work to our disadvantage. It is an
unwarrantable concession to our enemies, who are
ever advising us to return to our native land ! Is
not America the land of our birth? Are we not
as much Americans as others of the same nativity ?
Are we not by birth and by the supreme statutes
Os the nation American citizens? Then let us
drop the term African.— New Orleans Tribune.
A Lament.
A young man, .laboring over the gradual en
croachments of woman-kind on maspuline territo
ry, in the'matter of dress, breaks into song as fol
lows:
They took our coats, at first we hardly missed ’em ,
And then they aped our dickeys and cravats;
They stole our sacks—we only laughed and kissed
them.
Emboldened then they stole our very hats,
Until by slow and sure dagrees, the witches,
Have taken all—our coats, hats, boots and breech
es.
Attachment of Horses to Each Other.—
Two Haiioveriaii horses had long served together
during the Peninsular war, in a German brigade
of artillery. They had assisted in drawing the
same gun, and had been inseparable companions
in many battles. One of them was at last killed ;
and, alter the engagement, the survivor was piquet
ed as usual, and bis food brought to him. He re
fused, however, to eat, and was constantly turning
round his head to look for his companion, some
times neighing as if to call him. All the care that
was bestowed upon him was of no avail. He was
surrounded by other horses, but he did hot notice
them, and- he shortly afterward died,-not having
once tasted food from the time liis former.associate
was killed.
Eigr Gen Grant is forty-seven, and Mr. Colfax
only forty-six. President Jdmson is sixty-one, Mr.
Seward sixty-eight, Gen Schofield but thirty-eight,
Mr. Wells sixty-seven, Mr. McCulloch fifty-eight,
Mr. Randall and Mr. Browning, fifty-nine. We do
not know the exact age of Mr. Evarts bptlie. can

The Sourthern States, broken down by re
bellious tolly and languishing for the rejuvenating
influences of Northern enterprise and capital have
no other welcome for northern men than the op
probrious epithet ot “carpet-baggers.” The suicidal
policy which thus builds up a social Chinese wall
to the exclusion of wealth and enterprise would be
a reproach to a nation of savages. It cannot be
maintained in Mexico or Japan, much less in the
United States. —Delaware ( 0/iioj Gazelle.
