The, Tribune says :
“ Fresh meats of all kinds, at the j
price which butchers retail it is not
economical food ; meats will average
la shillinga pound. Salted meats arc !
j cheaper than fresh. In economizing
food, meat should never be fried or
boiled. If you would get the most :
substance out of fresh meat, make in
to soup or stew, or pot pie. In ma
king -oup soak your meat some hours
in cold water, and boil it in the same.
Thicken veith beans, peas, barley,
hominy, or broken bread. The bp.st
meat is the most economical for soup
Do not buy bones. If you boil meat
to eat never put it in cold water, j
Let it be boiling when you put the j
meat in the pot. Do not buy fresh
meat a pound or two at a time. Buy
a qarter or halfsheep. You get it at j

ter is a quarter cheaper.

• dried peas. They arc generally a lit
tle more-costly limn beans, but some
| think they will go farther. At any
! rate, they are good for a change.

Opelika Railroad. —On Tuesday

ley, to the effect that the Etowah
Bridge, on the State railroad, was de
stroyed by fire on Thursday night.—.
No particulars are given, The bridge
is near half a mile in length. New
piers have been built, with the view
of filling up as far as practicable the
gap spanned by the br.dge, the sam**
having been done with the other brldf
ges on the road. The d.t struetion ol
this bridge must, seriously interfere

children in this country who die under
ten years ofage, at least 100.000 might

He relates a story of sickness in a
boarding house at Williapisiown, Mas

puddings, Ate., full of saleratus. Ont
ofls boarders 13 were taken sick,
and were confined a long time; two
of them died, another barely’ escaped
death, and the others r< covered after
severe sickness. Prof. Tatlock and
Rev. Mr. Crawford, who ate but little
of the food, escaped illness.
