IjO©aE XFAN'S.
We respectfully call the attenlion of our
leaders, to the card of Joseph T. Inman,
hi this issue.
Editorial Ohaxos. From the Atlanta
New Era, we learn that Mr. A. It. Watson
has retired from the Editorial Department
of that paper, and assumed charge of the

Trade. — Owing to the inclemency of
the weather, for tiio past month, trade has
been rather on the decline. Corn is firm
at $1,50 ami the picsumption is thnt it
will be still higher, unless a way con be
Opened whereby a supply can be had.
We iearh that it will be several days be
fore the bridge in the X. &. C. rail road
will be repaired. Coin and other goods
can be boated from Dridgpprt to Chatta
nooga. It will incur a little more expell
ees but nevertheless it will alleviate the
demand in this and other seel ions of the
country.
Choice Wh-shcey.—We return thanks to
Major Rcvelpy for a sample of his choice
rec.ified, anil unadulterated whiskey, it is
line, stipe, ior to any of die Northern whis
key, as it contains none of those contami
nating Yankee poisons.
Also out thanks a.e due Mr. Patiie Gib
bons for a nice ticat in the way of some
excellent soda wa cr. He keeps all such
beverages, and can fix them up to suit the
taste of all.
The weather has been very gloomy and
cliangahle for the past three weeks ; yet wo
ho(>e this obstacle will soon bo removed
and a bright sun will welcome the spring-,
flowers to bloom in rich profusion unmo
lested by jack fiost.
That the corn may shoot forth from the
bosom «f the ea h; with the deep gtecu hue
to gladen the. fanners heart and 1 ifc liis spir
its into the skies of hope; hi anticipation
of a copious crop year, that die country
may be replenished with plenty.
Notwithstanding the long cloudy spell
anil occasional rain, mid the great freshet
of the Tennessee River and other smaller
streams; toe Chattahoochee, seems to have
kept within its meets and bounds; and
moved on in sile.it mageslv; not stoping to
dispute its rights, with any bridge, or mo
lest the property of any of its riparian
owners.
We hope the past cold spoP has not lob
bed the trees of their promised luxuriant
fruit; no doubt but that a portion of it has
been killed ; but the remainder, w ill bo lar
ger and the more choice j nt least If there
is not much we knmv it will be appreciated
the better.
From the (Irvenville Alabama IlaUy Advocate.
A NVont to Farmers.
You plant to be benefitted. You wish
to make good crops and get fail 1 prices
lor what you labor an I toil to make Nnu
endure the cold of winter and the heat of
summer. You rise early and work late to
secure yourself and family a competence ;
someth ng to put away for sickness and old
age, when the vigor of youth and manhood
is on the wane. To do these things re
r; liras reason. Then bs'en to reason.
Don’t lie carried away by a more hope that
what you plant will bring you a large a
uiount of money. There is no rule more
fully settled than that the supply and de
mand govern the price. Keep this in view,
and see what you are doing. The moat of
you wish to make a gieat deal of cotton.
Why? Because von believe it will bring
a good price. Hut are you not onw pursuing
the right course to get. what you are labor
ing for? Examine the matter a little
When the war ended, cotton went up very
high, because it was believed that there
were not a great many bales in the coun
try ; but so soon as it Was ascertained that
there were a much larger amount oil hand
than was supposed,- prices commenced de
clining. What has been the result ? Why,
you and the merchants have lost heavily.
—And it continues to go down.
Now if you plant all of your best land in
cotton , and neglect to raise yorr supplies,
next winter it will bring more than I'2 J cents
per pound ! What then ? You will be ru
ined. You will not have enough money
left to buy your provision, after paying
your hand-, and for your mules and horses
corn and bacon, which you are buying on
lime, to be paid for out of your cotton
crop! This is so. You admit it. Now,
what ought reasonable men do ? lie -ure
you plant enough in coin and grain to iaisc
pour own supplies. Then you will be inde
pendent; and the cotton which vou raise
will bring you about as much money as if
you had devoted all your energies, time
and means to the production of cotton
alone. The policy you are persuing will
make you the slaves to the farmers of the
grain and Stock raising Slates. You will
have to pay out to them the money, which
>on make by raising cotton, Uh corn, bacon,
and, males, horses, <fr. They will, in reali
ty, Imi the bcnefi.iaries of your farms ;
while you will toil all your days, va nly
struggling to overcome the burdens which
are Bearing out all yo ur energies.—Hut by
pursuing a different course, you can be the
masters of the situation, instead of being de
pendent upon si rangers fur the means of
sustenance. Now act like reasonable men.
Plant tome of your a,Aon lands in corn ;
go to work, raise your stock, and live at
hone.
The Liverpool Journal of Commerce, of
Fch. 9, which has just fallen nmlor our ob
servation, savß the Mobile Times, renders
the following irnte-morlein verdict upon Gon
gresaionul acta winch had then just been
initiated ;
The latest and most suicidal project yet
conceived by American politicians is it bill
about to be brought forward by the Recon
struction Committee for deciding the
States which took part in ihe rebellion into
five military districts, under military gov
ernment. The people in the North, instead
of endeavoring to heal the animosities ami
hatred aroused by the late war, and acting I
with magnanimity to their fellow-country- ]
men, are apparently doing everything to j
perpetuate the biiter hate between North j
and South, and forgetting tfie principals j
upon which the Union is based and lias j
risen to greatness, turning the power of
one section of the people into an insfm
ment of tvrany against another section
If the States are ever devilled, surely sucb
legislation as has been proposed is the one
thing most likely to effect that end.
