the magnet of attraction on last Sun

the weather—the sky being never so

Bro. Heywowhood, se ministrations
have met with hearty approval. His
subject was immortality. It is need
less to say that he did it justice. We
we would give an abstract but for the
fear of doing his discourse injustice.
A single brick from an edifice gives no
i lea of its grandeur; so a disjointed
fragment dissociated from neighboring
parts of a unified whole, is dipoiled
relatively of its beauty.
Huutfice it to say that our [Tuiiariiui
brother gave us an excellent discourse
at noon, and also at night.

Universalist Books.
We are frequently asked by friends
in various parts of the country where
and how they can obtain books setting
forth the doctrines of our denomina
tion.
We have made arrangements to sup
ply any of our readers, or friends, who
may want such books, on short notice.
Any one wishing to secure any book
in the following list, can have it sent
in short order, by remitting to us by
registered letter, or post office order,
the price annexed to such book on
the list, we paying the postage on the
book, or books, so ordered.
DOCTRINAL.
At 3| o’clock an eager assemblage
of a miscellaneous kind, yet for the
most part intelligent and frank in the
expression of their countenances, sat
with their eyes on the lecturer who
was so excellent a purveyor of that
sort of food for which churchless men
are usually, if not always, ravenously
hungry.
“God is spirit, and they who wor
ship Him, must do it in spirit and in
truth.”
That was the text.
The lecturer was full of his subject
—full as the sea, with its waves lash
ing the shore day and night. His
manner was more impassioned than
usual, growing still more fervent as
he warmed with his subject, until lie
was all ablaze with an inspirational en
thusiasm that conquers by storm rath
er than by tha slow approaches of sap
ping and mining.
Spiritual worship, as the opposite of
ritualism, was the burthen of his dis
course. The visible world was his
Bible; its commentary was in his own
mind, its sanctions in his own heart.
The Universe was a gorgeous temple,
lit with the chandaliers of sun, moon
.and stars; below was the green earth
with its beneficent bosom yielding sus
tenance to man and beast, and over alj
was the infinite God, the befitting
symbol of whom was the .Sun, whose
smile was on the roof of the cottage
the same on the dome of the palace.
He did not believe configuration at
tached to the invisible God, whose ex
cess of glory Re eye could look upon.
The sun was the veil that covered His
face, and the mystery of His being
was in the solitude of the mountains
and shadowy valleys, where the spec
tral winds whisperd to the startled ear
something—something at the bottom
of the ocean, where golden anchors,
dimly seen through tresses of sea
weed, tell us that all is well with the
fastenings,—that argosies, glittering
with the preciousness of destiny are
never stranded.
God was the soul of the Universe,
looking at us with its myriads of star
ry eyes—talking to us with its myriads
of eloquent tongues. The hymns that
he listened to with rapture were those
of the song birds in the loneliness of
the forest, in the shadow of a moun.
tain, where the wings Divine seemed
to cover him as the cleft of a great
rock, while the storm-king mustered
his squadrons to battle!
There was but one imperfection to
mar the beauty of Prof. Bowman’s
lecture, and that was his incidental
trioute to atheism, which is Godless,
souless, epitomizing in one dread sen
tence the summit of all human hopes,
and of all human aspirations : “Death
ends all.” Man dies as a bullock, his
eyes fixed in the death-stare, seeing
nothing—nothing but stark oblivion
—hearing, with delirious consciousness,
nothing but the sobs of one who holds
hii hand—feeling nothing but the ice
of an eternal winter without promise
of spring—a winter whose pittiless
frost and snow is to be piled upon him
forever, as upon stockg and stones and
all inanimate things, which are graded
as our equals in the mausoleum that
awaits all.
Stripped of its glamour, that is athe
ism, pure and simple. It is so ruth
jess that it takes all from us, even
ihope. The sickly taper in the hands of

THE DEVO IIONAL HYMN, by Mrs. S.
F. Adams, suggesting the title of this pic
ture, it has been “music hallowed,” trine
lated into many languages, and sung
throughout the civilized world. Its pure
and elevating sentiment, charming versifi
cation, and melody of music, has placed it
among the never dying songs.
This picture represents a woman holding
inspired pages, her hands clasped, and eyes
turned heavenward. It is a night scene.—
The moan shining through the partially cur
tained window, does not produce the flood
of light which falls over the woman’s face.
This light is typical of that light which
flows from above and dispels the clouds
trom the soul in its moments of devotion.
The becom’ng drapery, all the accessories
the admirable distribution of light anc
shade,—all these details, indispensable to
the perfection of Art, will repay prolonged
attention. But their ctiaf beauty consists
as it should, in contributing to the genera
eflect,—the embodying of pure devotional
sentiment.
