Traffic stop leads to
two drug arrests
A traffic stop on McDonald
Circle last week resulted in
two drug arrests by the Banks
County Sheriff’s Office.
A vehicle was pulled over
by a sheriff’s deputy for weav
ing over the roadway. During
the traffic stop, approximately
3.7 grams of suspected meth
amphetamine was discovered
in a film canister after being
dropped from the passenger
side of the vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle,
Michael Scott Chambers, 31,
of Rose Lane, Commerce, was
charged with weaving over the
roadway, no valid license and
possession of methamphet
amine with intent to distrib
ute.
Also arrested was Misty
Michelle Pittman, 33, of Rose
Lane, Commerce, who was
charged with possession of
methamphetamine with intent
to distribute.
Chambers later told investi
gators that they had picked up
the methamphetamine in an
other county and were going
to sell it, according to Sheriff
Charles Chapman.
Both Chambers and Pittman
were transported to the Banks
County Jail from the traffic
stop without incident.
The investigation continues
by the sheriff’s office criminal
investigation division.
State troopers focus
on impaired drivers
The Georgia State Patrol is
reminding motorists to plan
carefully before hitting the
highways for the upcoming
New Year’s holiday travel pe
riod. Troopers are cautioning
drivers to plan for a sober des
ignated driver if alcohol con
sumption will be part of the
celebrations.
Colonel Mark McDonough,
Commissioner of the Georgia
Department of Public Safety,
said Georgia State Troopers
will be patrolling throughout
the holiday periods with en
forcement emphasis on im
paired drivers, unrestrained
drivers and passengers, and
drivers exceeding the speed
limit.
“Each holiday period, troop
ers are called to investigate
traffic crashes involving seri
ous injuries or fatalities, and
these crashes could have been
prevented,’’ he said.
The New Year’s holiday pe
riod begins Friday, December
30 at 6 p.m. and ends Monday
night, January 2.
Last year during the New
Year’s holiday period, troopers
investigated 320 traffic crash
es in Georgia that resulted in
270 injuries and seven traffic
deaths. During holiday pe
riod patrols, 174 people were
arrested for driving under the
influence.
Colonel McDonough re
minds drivers to plan their
travels carefully by making
sure the motor vehicle is ready
for a long trip by checking the
air pressure in the tires; mak
ing sure the windshield wiper
blades are not cracked; check
ing that all headlights, brake
lights, turn signals, and tag
lights are working; and check
ing the vehicle’s fluid levels.
“Before leaving on the trip,
make sure everyone is prop
erly restrained, take frequent
rest stops along the way, and
don’t speed,’’ he said. “This is
a festive time of the year and
we want everyone to enjoy the
holiday season.”
