Select the best wood for efficient heating The cold winter weather has definitely arrived! If you like to burn wood in a fireplace or a wood burning stove, you may need to stock up on some good seasoned firewood. The type of wood that you bum deter mines how long the wood will burn and how hot a fire it will burn. Some com mon types of wood good for splitting and burning, with a high heat value, are oak, hickory, dog wood, beech, hard maple, mulberry, apple and ash. Some softer types of wood that bum quickly and have a low heat value are pine, poplar, elm, gum, walnut and cottonwood. These woods are less dense and can contain res ins and oils which make them good for starting fires. Properly seasoning or cur ing wood is very important when using wood for heat. There are over four 55-gallon barrels of water in a cord of green firewood. It can take over 8,000 BTU’s per cord to evaporate this amount of water when burning that green wood. Ideally, you need to dry out the green wood by curing it. It works best to split it into smaller pieces, stack it under a shel ter or tarp and have good ventilation around the stacks. It usually takes about six to nine months to properly cure out firewood. The curing pro cess should last long enough so that the moisture content drops down to about twenty percent. If you haven’t prepared for those cold winter days that are approaching fast, you should consider the type of wood that you want to burn, crank up the chain saw, and start cutting.
