Banks County School
Superintendent received a
top state award this when he
was named the 2013 Georgia
Superintendent of the Year,
which has been named as the
“Education Story of the Year.”
The Banks County Board
of Education nominated
Erwin who is in his 10th year
as superintendent in Banks
County and has led the system
to multiple consecutive years
as meeting Adequate Yearly
Progress (AYP).
“Mr. Erwin’s commitment
is unparalleled,” said Neal
Brown, chairman of the Banks
County Board of Education.
“He has worked tirelessly to
ensure that each and every stu
dent in Banks County Schools
receives a quality education.”
Erwin was chosen from
among 30 or nominations and
a group of four finalists.
Erwin will go on to repre
sent Georgia in the national
superintendent of the year
program. The winner will
be announced in February
at the AASA National
Conference on Education.
The nomination cited addi
tional accomplishments
under his leadership, includ
ing decreased dropout
rates, increased SAT scores,
increased GHSGT scores
and increased CRCT scores
in almost all subject areas,
increased percentage of stu
dents with disabilities who
receive instruction in the
regular education setting,
increased percentage of
highly qualified teachers, and
decreased achievement gap
between students with dis
abilities and regular education
students.

In October, the Banks County
Board of Commissioners
approved a resolution targeting
property at Banks Crossing for
redevelopment. The property,
including the former site of The
Potter, will be eligible for rede
velopment following this action.
“We want to make sure it is
a good resource of revenue
for Banks County over time,”
community planner Brad Day
said at that meeting. “We want
to make sure it doesn’t get run
down. This is the first step in
revitalizing that area.”
Approving a redevelopment
plan allows the county to issue
tax exempt bonds and makes
the county competitive for
federal funding and state tax
credits.

the general store functioning
as usual and a saw mill was
added to cut wood. The saw
mill is no longer in existence
on the farm.
In a warranty deed dated
July 1,1938 between Waters
and Louella Boring to Barden,
the property was referred to as
the J.H. Brooks Home Place
for the first time. On Dec. 1,
1948, partial ownership was
transferred by warranty deed
to James Hubert Boring by
Waters. Boring had a healthy
crop of corn, which was used
to feed over 100 cows he
owned. Cotton was still being
produced on the farm and the
general store and the saw mill
were closed and out of busi
ness.
From July 2, 1951, to Dec.
17, 1975, the farm was under
the ownership and direction
of Marie Boring McMillen and
was still grazing cattle. The
fields were producing corn
for both human and animal
consumption and some cotton
was still grown.
McMillen used the second
floor of the house as an area
where she made and sold
ladies hats.
Ulysses Smith Boring and
James Samuel Boring contin
ued to graze cattle/livestock
on the farm from Dec. 17, 1975,
to Dec. 17, 1976. Corn was also
being grown for the livestock
to eat and Pole Herefords
were being sold as breeding
stock.
From Dec. 17, 1976, to Nov.
28, 1990, Keith Edward Boring
and Todd Brian Boring contin
ued to sell Pole Herefords as
breeding stock.
Todd Brian Boring and Mary
Carol Boring took over owner
ship of the farm in Nov. 28,
1990, and in Dec. 2011, due to
the theft of cattle, they decided
to change the farm for cultiva
tion of hay and raise finished
Angus beef for the private mar
ket.
Todd Boring is still handling
the operation of the farm and
the primary product is hay.
Today, Boring raises some
poultry and livestock for his
and his family’s personal use.
Todd Boring said it is his
intention to continue the J.H.
Brooks lineage to his daughter,
Taylor Christian Boring.
“She will be the sixth genera
tion of the J.H. Brooks lineage
to own and operate the farm,”
Boring said.
