First Corinthians 6:19-20 tell us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. We are not our own. We were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with our bodies. One of the best ways we can honor God is with a healthy lifestyle. Let's face it, there are consequences, for giving in to the temptation of eating too much of the wrong things and a lack of exercise. About four years ago, God laid a particular phrase on my heart. “Eat to live, not live to eat.” I’ll confess I ate whatev er I wanted whenever I wanted it. I was overweight and out of shape. I began to meditate on this scripture and the phrase, and the results were great. To the glory of God, I lost 60 pounds. I was strong and steadfast for three years. Over the last few months I have waivered, and I am suffering the conse quences. The Lord has convicted me to get back to my healthy style of living. It’s not going to be easy, but I know God will be with me every step of the way. First, I will pray and ask God to help me on this journey. Those who love to eat as much as I do, know what I am talking about. It is going to be by the grace of God, and on some days a miracle of God, for me to maintain my healthy lifestyle. It’s not really about losing weight as much as being healthy. Although weight gain is a by product of my tearing into the food like I do. As I pray, I am going to be sure and remem ber what God has already done for me in the past, and give him praise. “Thank you Lord for the weight I lost before, and thank you Lord for the weight I am going to lose.” I want to share some of the tips that helped me on my journey the first time around. • I gave up tea and soft drinks and began to drink a lot of water. I never thought I could give up soft drinks, but it became a lifestyle change, and I’ve not looked back. I also drank a glass of water before I ate: I felt somewhat full before I began the meal. • I gave up fried foods all together. I learned to love a good grilled chicken sandwich. When I had a desire for French fries, I'd get out the cooking spray and bake my fries in the oven. • I tried to balance my protein and carbohydrates, and focused on portion control. I tried to make my portions about the size of the palm of my hand. • Vegetables and fruits were a major part of my menu every day. • I would have a snack in between meals, so I wouldn't feel famished when I sat down for a meal. A cup of yogurt, an apple, or a handful of almonds always worked for me. • I love sweets, so I improvised when it came to dessert. I’ve been known to put Fat Free Cool Whip in between two low-fat graham crackers, freeze them, and have a wonderful ice cream sandwich. • Most importantly, I exercised three to five times a week for at least 30 min utes. I never felt so healthy in my life!! • I also had an accountability partner every step of the way. Find someone who will congratulate you in the good times, and pray for you in the rough spots. • Occasionally, I would treat myself to whatever I wanted. It’s my prayer that each of us will honor God with a healthy body during 2012. May we eat to live and not live to eat. Sherry Lewis is a resident ofMciysville.
