School
Program helps students catch up
Banks County High School is
offering the Unit Recovery Program
for students whose average falls
below the passing grade of 70.
This program is provided by
BCHS and the 21st Century
Community Learning Center grant
for students who earn an average
of 65-69 in selected courses during
first semester. The program is con
ducted during the after school pro
gram through an Internet-based,
self-motivated computer program
called Apex.
Students who fall within this
range may be given the opportu
nity to earn credit for a course that
would otherwise be lost because
of a semester grade below 70.
The final decision is based on
attendance from 1st semester as
well as teacher and administration
recommendations. Teachers will
prescribe lessons (units) for quali
fied students on Apex based on
individual student needs.
Qualified students will be
required to attend the Students
With A Purpose (SWAP) program
for thirty days from 3:15-5:15
p.m. between January 5-February
24. During this 34-day period,
students will complete all of the
assignments in the prescribed les
sons (units). Content area teachers
and staff will be available to pro
vide student support.
Once a student has completed
the required time in SWAP and the
required Apex assignments - pass
ing each with a 70+, the failing
grade will be replaced with a final
grade of 70.
If qualified students do not take
advantage of this opportunity dur
ing the allotted time period, stu
dents will have to retake the entire
course during the regular school
day if their schedule permits, or
attend SWAP or Summer School
in order to earn credit.
Unit Recovery Program high
lights include:
•students must qualify by earn
ing between a 65-69 average in
an academic course and obtaining
teacher/administration approval
based on attendance and work
ethic from the previous semester.
•Courses available include: All
Social Studies, English, Science
and Math classes: French/Spanish
•Students are limited to a total
of six Apex lessons (units). For
example, a student may have two
lessons to complete in U.S. History
and four lessons in Physical
Science (six total lessons) or five
lessons in Biology and one les
son in Math (six total lessons) or
any other combination equaling six
lessons (units).
•Students will be working on
a self-motivated, Internet-based
computer program called Apex.
•The opportunity will only be
offered January 5-February 24.
Students must attend SWAP, M-F,
3:15-5:15 p.m. for 30 days prior to
or during Jan. 5-Feb. 24.
•If a student does not start the
program by Friday, January 6, the
opportunity for unit recovery will
be rescinded and his/her failing
grade will stand. In addition, his/
her 2nd semester schedule may be
adjusted based on the decision to
not participate in UR.
•The highest grade a student
may earn is a 70
