ALTO Hearing for 201 3 budget set Called meeting planned for 2012 amended budget At the monthly meeting on Jan. 8, the Alto Town Council set a public hearing for 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 22, to present the proposed 2013 bud get. The council will hold a called meeting on the 2012 amended budget at 7 p.m., following the public hearing. Photo by Sharon Hogan BOE recognizes wrestling coaches and team on state championship BY SHARON HOGAN During Monday’s monthly meet ing, the Banks County Board of Education recognized the Banks County High School wrestling team and coaches on their state cham pionship win over the weekend in Macon. BCHS principal Jody Goodroe brought the Georgia High School Association AAA Team Duals 2013 State Championship trophy for every one at the meeting to see. Four of the coaches involved with the high school wrestling team were also on hand for the meeting - Kasey Hanley, Mark Crook, Sam Baxter and Tyson Baxter. Coach Adam Nichols was not in attendance at the meeting. Hanley said, “I am so proud of how these kids performed down there this weekend.” Goodroe said, “Today at the high school people who were not even directly involved with the wres tling program were walking around with their heads held a little higher because of the state title.” OTHER BUSINESS In other business at Monday’s meeting: • following a more than one-hour closed, the board approved the fol lowing personnel items: Trisha L. Ward, information technology spe cialist for the remainder of the 2013- 13 school year and Carolyn Turner, part-time custodian for the remain der of the 2012-13 school year. • the following project requests continued on page 2A Bank robbery suspect charged BY SHARON HOGAN A 39-year-old man from Greensboro, N.C., faces robbery charges in Banks County in connection with the April 24, 2008, robbery at Northeast Georgia Bank, 30990 Highway 441 South, Commerce. Last week, Banks County Sheriff’s Office authorities picked up Darris Antoine Workman, 4708 Meadowcroft Road, in Greensboro, N.C., where he had been arrested. BCSO Chief Deputy Shawn Wilson said on Monday, “Workman allegedly drove the vehicle used in the armed robbery. He drove the vehicle to and from the robbery location. He aided another in committing the robbery at Northeast Georgia Bank.” The warrant taken out on Workman after he was arrested by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Wilson added. Workman is currently being housed in the Banks County Jail. Banks County Sheriff Carlton Speed said another man facing charges in the Banks County robbery, William Otis James Brown, also from Greensboro, N.C., is in federal prison on an armed robbery charge. “As soon as he is released from fed eral prison, we have a hold on him and we will pick him up on the outstanding warrants we have for his arrest,” Speed said. Workman tiSSf* sole) 13 i cawnras Dalton elected chair of tax assessors board for 2013 BY SHARON HOGAN At the monthly meeting Jan. 9, Len Dalton was elected as chairman of the Banks County Board of Tax Assessors for 2013. Nancy Sims was chosen as secretary. In other business at the monthly meeting, three parcels were approved for 2012 Conservation Use Valuation Assessment. Chief appraiser Kevin Whitman informed the board that the 2013 preliminary pre-bill mobile home digest was uploaded to the vendor, Harris World, on Jan. 3. “Georgia law mandates the information be given to the tax commissioner no later than Jan. 5 of the taxable year,” Whitman said. “Having been notified of the receipt of the information, the tax commissioner will issue tax bills at her discretion.”
