He was bom November 14, 1925, and reared in the metropolitan Atlanta area. A veteran of World War II, he served in the United States Navy with a rank of Lt.j.g. He also served in student pastorates and was called to be the pastor of the Columbia Drive Baptist Church in Decatur when the church was organized November 20, 1949. He served as Pastor at Columbia Drive for over 39 years and returned after retiring from New Orleans Seminary. He served as Director and professor at the North Georgia Campus of the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary for over 14 years, retiring in 2001 to teach adjunctive- ly and pastor Columbia Drive. He retired from the Seminary at age 80 in 2005. He was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Geraldine Turner Aderhold. Don served as president of the Atlanta Baptist Pastor’s Conference, Georgia Baptist Pastor’s Conference, Mercer Ministerial Alumni Association, and the Home Mission Board for two terms. He served as Trustee of the Atlanta Baptist College, now Mercer University in Atlanta, and Mercer University in Macon, and was a member of the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention as well as the Foundation Board of the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Survivors include a daughter, Laura Griffo and her husband, Jim, Birmingham, Ala.; son, David Aderhold and his wife, Rita, Dacula; grandchildren, Mark and Michelle Griffo, and Marshall and Logan Aderhold. The funeral service was held Saturday, April 6, at the Lawrenceville First Baptist Church. Interment was in Melwood Cemetery, Stone Mountain. (18360-45.80) Nell Bethel WINDER - Nell Williams Bethel, 98, passed away Sunday, April 7, 2013. She was the daughter of the late Harrison Lee and Jessie Lyle Elrod. During her life she worked as assistant vice-president for R&R Manufacturing and was a member of the board of directors. She was active in the Methodist Church since she was 12 years old and held every position a woman can in the church family. Mrs. Bethel was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Bethel; her first husband, Claude B. “Shug” Williams; daughter, Ann Savage; and brother, Joe Elrod. Survivors include a son, George Williams, Bethlehem; four grand children, Kathy Camaran, Ronanne Brown, George Williams Jr., and Vicki Luna; eight great-grand children; and one great- great-granddaughter. Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 9, at the Winder First United Methodist Church in Winder with the Rev. Terry Tippens and Todd McCain officiating. Bom in Athens, she was the daughter of the late J.C. and Essie Whitehead Cowart. She was preced ed in death by a brother, Lewis Cowart. He was born in Rockmart, June 10, 1941, the son of the late Clarence and Nell Cook. He was a member of Chestnut Mountain Church, an avid sports lover, and a retired insur ance agent from Liberty National. Mr. Cook was preceded in death by a sis ter, Marilyn Blanchard. Bruce Elrod PENDERGRASS - Bruce Elrod, 84, passed away Tuesday, April 2, 2013. He was bom in Jackson County, the second youngest son of John and Eula Whitehead Elrod. Mr. Elrod was a lifetime member and Deacon of the Pendergrass Baptist Church and was a veter- an of the United V X States Air A 1 Force. He was a farmer \~ r 3 and was jam i retired from the Jefferson Post Office, where he was a rural route carrier. He loved, and was loved, by his dog, Susie. Mr. Elrod was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Elrod; and sisters, Geraldine Elrod, Grace Elrod Benson, and Martha Lee Elrod Sheridan; sister-in- law, Annie Laura Elrod; and brother-in-law, H.M. Benson. He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving aboard the USS Hornet. He was retired from General Times in Athens, as a machinist and was a member of the Bethany United Methodist Church. Mr. Hix was preceded in death by his first wife, Peggy Collins Hix.
