WEDNESDAY, APRIL 10, 201 3 THE BANKS COUNTY NEWS PACE 5B Church Offer God our best Do we give only what is required to the Lord or do we give sacrificially? In Ephesians 2:8 the Bible says, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith— and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.” While we can’t buy or work our way into salvation, Romans 12:1 reminds us to pres ent our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, to worship Him. Thinking back over the last week, month, or even year, I reflected over my service to the Lord. Am I serving God will zeal or just doing enough to keep my conscience clear? In 2 Samuel 24, there is a wonderful example to adhere to in life. Here we see where David refused to give God something that didn’t cost him anything. King David decided to take a census of the fighting men in Israel, which seemed to show a lack of trust in God to take care of them. Scripture tells us God was not pleased, and there were con sequences for this action. God offered David a choice of three consequences, and he chose a three day plague on the land. David and the elders fell down on their faces before the Lord, and he received a message from God. He was to build an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah, so the plague could be stopped. When Araunah heard this news, he offered David the land and oxen free of charge. David knew that he has dishonored God and with a broken and contrite spirit, he had come to his senses. In verse 24 we read of David’s reply. “No, I insist on paying you for it. I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” We are faced with choices each and every day. We can give God over very best or offer Him our leftovers, if we have anything else to give. When we tithe, do we give in faith when we get paid, or do we wait to see if we have any money left over at the end of the week? If we give of our first fruits, we are making a statement. “God I know I can trust you to get me through the week.” It’s not just about money. What about spending time with God? Do we bow our heads as we get into bed at night, or are we mindful of our Creator throughout the day? I can assure you God loves to fellowship with His people throughout the day. He sure has convicted me to put down my cell phone, and talk to Him on my way to and from work each day. What about our service to Him? Do we show up for church, just enough to keep from feeling guilty? Or are we joyful about being involved in His business all the time. My prayer is that we, like David, we com mit to offer God our very best. He certainly gave His very best for us! Sherry Lewis is a resident of Maysville.
