I can drop one seed into the ground and the fruit that springs forth can keep me busy for months. My coun tertops have been lined with squash, cucumbers, toma toes, and okra, and I know I only plant ed a few seeds. In Matthew 13: 18-23 Jesus explains the Parable of the Sower in terms we can all understand, a farmer planting seeds. He likens the seed to a person who hears the Word of God. First, there’s a seed that falls on a footpath, where the dirt is very hard, and the seed can’t penetrate the dirt. This represents those who hear the message about the Kingdom but don’t under stand it. The enemy comes and snatches away the seed that was planted, while is lays uncovered. What’s the remedy? A farmer must till the dirt, so the seed will have a chance. It’s the same with us. We’ve got to plow up our hearts. We should prepare to hear the Word whether in our private Bible study or in a church service. Before we begin, it’s important to ask God to give us understanding. May we put everything else out of our minds and focus on Him. Let us realize this is our message from the Lord. Next, there’s a seed which falls on rocky soil. This represents a person who receives the message with joy, but they fall away as the trials and tribulations come their way. The rocks prevent them from getting rooted and grounded in the faith. This reminds me of a new Christian who needs another person to take them by the hand and disciple them in the Lord. It’s so important to stand with our fellow broth ers and sisters who need guidance. God has called us to encourage and help each other along the way. Third, Jesus tells of a clut ter hearted listener. The seed is planted, but it is quickly crowded out by the thorns, also known as worries of this life or other priorities. Are we too busy to hear what God has to say to us? Lord, help us to make Him a priority in our lives. When we get our priorities in order the soil will be right for planting. And finally, the Lord describes the seed which falls on good ground. It’s the good hearted listener, a per son who truly hears, under stands and obeys God’s Word. At that point there will be a harvest of thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times as much as had been plant ed. Now that’s a harvest for the Kingdom! Let us begin to look at the soil of our hearts. May it become our prayer to be a good hearted listener. How is that possible? James 1:22-25 is a good place to start. Christians should be doers of the Word and not hearers only. We should begin to see ourselves in the mirror of God’s Word. We should believe and obey God’s Word and the fruit will come forth. Sherry Lewis is a resident of Maysville.
