The Presiding Justice serves in his absence. The Chief Justice is the main spokesperson for the Court, as well as for the entire judi ciary. He presides over oral arguments and runs the meet ings in which the Court makes its decisions, although he has only one vote as does each of the Justices. The Chief Justice, who serves one four- year term, also chairs the Georgia Judicial Council, which governs all levels of the state’s courts. Presiding Justice Thompson was Chief Judge of the Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit when Gov. Zell Miller appointed him in 1994 to the Georgia Supreme Court. Prior to that, he served as presi dent of the statewide Council of Superior Court Judges. Among numerous awards, he has received the Outstanding Alumnus Award from Mercer University Law School Alumni, the Distinguished Achievement Award from Georgia College and State University, the Distinguished Achievement Award from the Baldwin County Bar Association, the Outstanding Public Service Award from the Milledgeville Kiwanis Club and the Distinguished Service Award from the Milledgeville Jaycees. Miller appointed him to the state Supreme Court 1995. He spent the pre vious eight years as a state court judge in Cobb County. In 1969, he joined the law firm of Edwards, Bentley Awtrey & Parker of Marietta where he became a partner in 1973. An Atlanta native, Justice Hines graduated from Henry W. Grady High School, Emory University and Emory University School of Law. For the last 12 years, he has served as Chairman of the Georgia Supreme Court’s Committee on Justice for Children. He and his wife, Helen, have two grown children. Both justices will be sworn into their new positions in a ceremony in the state Supreme Court courtroom on Aug. 15. Posting address helps 911 responders The Banks County E-911 Center is providing informa tion to citizens on correctly posting addresses in order to be better served. “We are requesting that you take a moment to make sure your 911 numbers are posted and are clearly visible from the roadway” EMA/911 direc tor Deidra Moore said. “The importance of having your 911 numbers posted cannot be emphasized enough. If your numbers are not post ed, it could create a delay in emergency responders locat ing your residence. By post ing your numbers, you can be assured that there will be no delay in response due to not being able to locate your resi dence quickly.” Guidelines to follow in post ing 911 addresses include the following: • The numbers should be at least three inches tall. •The numbers should be reflective. •The numbers should be posted on a contrasting back ground. •The numbers should be posed at the end of the drive way. •If there are several resi dences or structures sharing a driveway, all of the numbers should be posted at the end of the driveway and the indi vidual numbers should also be posted in front of each residence or structure. Citizens may purchase the completed E-911 num ber sign at the Banks County Planning Office, located at the Courthouse Annex, 150 Hudson Ridge, Homer. The cost is $20, which includes the post, bolt, sign plate and numbers. At time of purchase, the sign will be completely prepared and ready to post.
