PAGE 8A THE BANKS COUNTY NEWS WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, 201 3 VISIT TO MONT ST. MICHEL TIME TO SHOP Banks County High School stu dents took time to shop in St. Malo during their spring break trip. SCENIC VIEW Courtney Gailey is shown at the top of Mont St. Michel. A windy, snowy day in Normandy weather was way too cold, and rainy to stay outside. Only the bravest souls decided to go for a guided tour on the walls of the town. The rest of the club members decided to go on an all-out shopping spree to avoid the nasty weather. The shops were plentiful, warm, and dry. Club member Jeffrey Nicholson said, “This was one of the best days, in my opin ion, due to the fact that I found a lot of items of my interest and purchased them. I found a pair of Lea Cock Sportifi shoes and a warm scarf that was badly needed due to how cold it was.” Club member Asa Hubbard said, “I wish I had more time to explore St. Malo, but it was just too cold.” The club is enrolling now for next year’s tour to Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland. Those interested should contact Mrs.Wisecup at BCHS at 706-677-2221 or pwise- cup@banks.kl2.ga.us. GATEWAY Shown is the gateway in Mont St. Michel. The students of the Banks County World Culture and Language Club climbed all 939 stairs to the top of the castle and looked upon the land that surrounded the castle till the water would come in and leave just one way in the castle and one way out. BY MASON PATTON Mont St. Michel is a small rocky island on the coast of France in Normandy locat ed on the Couesnon River. When the Banks County World Languages and Cultures Club took a trip to France for Spring Break, this was one of the many magnificent stops they visited. Mont St. Michel is an island off the coast of Normandy accessible only by one man made road that is, many times, covered by ocean surf. The island monastery is best known for the medieval theme that is still there today, along with the churches that occupy most of this castle. Some history behind Mont St. Michel uncovers the purpose of it being built, which was to dedicate the beautiful site to the archangel Michel to show appreciation for all he had done in the name of God. Mont St. Michel’s castle was also used as a defense against the enemies of the kingdom of the 7th century. Legend has it that the Archangel Michael appeared to a priest and told him where to build it and who to get to ensure that it will be finished. The priest found an architect who built this magnif icent castle which then intro duced a new gothic style of architectural style to the world. The students of the Banks A LONG CLIMB Jeffrey Nicholson is shown climbing the 939 steps at Mont St. Michel’s castle. County World Culture and Language Club climbed all 939 stairs to the top of the castle and looked upon the land that surrounded the castle till the water would come in and leave just one way in the castle and one way out. On the way up, it started snowing. Even though it was cold and miserable, the view from the top was really neat to see. Club member, Shayla Enman, said, “I had my breath taken away while looking at all the beauty I saw. Also, I could not believe all the souvenir shops that were in the castle.” Over all, the trip to Mont St. Michel was a trip that will never be forgotten. Within a short while after leaving Mont St. Michel, the bus arrived in St. Malo, a walled town on the beach where the INSIDE THE WALLS Shown is inside the walls at Mont St. Michel.
