Wilkinson The annual Memorial Day Event in downtown Homer is set for 10 a.m. Monday in the Banks County Veterans’ Memorial Park. Senator John Wilkinson, Toccoa, who represents Senate District 50, will be the guest speaker. Sen. Wilkinson, a Republican, joined the Georgia State Senate in 2011 dur ing a special election. He represents Banks, Habersham, Rabun, Towns, Stephens, Franklin and portions of Hall and Jackson counties. Sen. Wilkinson serves as the chair man of the Agriculture and Consumer Affairs committee and vice chair man of the Education and Youth Committee. He is also a member of the Appropriations and Government Oversight committees. Leaders of the event urge everyone to come out and show honor and respect for all the sacrifices made by the service men and women. “Please bring your own lawn chair,” leaders state. GUEST SPEAKER John Wilkinson, Toccoa, who rep resents Senate District 50, will be the guest speaker at Monday’s Memorial Day event in Homer. OTHER MEMORIAL DAY EVENTS LULA The City of Lula will hold its annual Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday in the Veterans Park on Main Street. A wreath will be placed at the Veterans wall and there will be a guest speaker. MAYSVILLE A Memorial Day Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 27, at 437 Sims Street - formerly Old Rogers Hotel, Maysville. The event will include speakers, music and some special activities. Everyone is welcomed. Light refreshments will be provided. “Please bring a lawn chair and come and celebrate our Veterans and our freedom,” leaders state. SURPRISE APPEARANCE Banks County Primary School kindergartener Cam Cooper was singing a Brantley Gilbert song at the school talent show last week when the country star made a surprise appearance. Brantley hid back stage and came out on the stage to join Cam in singing. Brantley is a long-time friend of Cam’s dad. Also shown is Janice Reiselt, BCPS principal. Banks County High graduates to walk Friday Ceremony takes place at 8 p.m.in Leopard stadium The 2013 senior class at Banks County High School will hold its graduation exercise at 8 p.m. on Friday in Leopard stadium. No reserved seating is permitted and gates will open at 6 p.m. In case of inclement weather, the com mencement exercise will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, in Leopard stadium. A group of 164 students are set to receive their diplomas. Hannah Denise Garrison is the valedicto rian, Isaac Blong Junior Lee is salutatorian of the class and Courtney Michele Gailey is first honorarian. The walls and floor were damaged by termites and had to be replaced. The restoration project began in June and was finished at the end of October. Photos by Sharon Hogan DOGTROT OPENED UP When the recent restoration work was done at the Fort Hollingsworth-White House the dog trot, or covered walkway between the two-sto- ry single-pen fort and the house addition, was opened up to create a pass-through between the two structures. The fort is located in Banks County, just off Hwy. 441 between Cornelia and Homer, in the Hollingsworth Community, 2307 Wynn Lake Rd. Alto. Activities will include: Tours of the frontier fort built in 1793, car show, music, storytell ing, 1860s Civilian Society dance, food, including barbecue and fried pies, Civil War re-enactment and arts and crafts. Author the former Denise Weimer will be at the event, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to dis cuss “Sautee Shadows,” the first of a four- book series that links antebellum Georgia’s coast and mountains from the time of the Georgia Gold Rush through The War Between the States. She will also be direct ing two demonstrations of mid-1800s dance. A car show will also be held at Fort Hollingsworth - White House on Saturday. Registration will be from 10 a.m. to noon.
