Davis hired as new school superintendent

The Banks County Board of Education,
during a called meeting on April 2, hired
Stan Davis as the new school superin
tendent.
Davis will begin his duties as Banks
County School Superintendent in mid-
May.
He was hired as a 12-month employee,
at a salary of $ 130,000 per year, based on
230 working days, Shane Roberts, BOE
chairman said.
Davis signed a three-year contract with
the BOE.
“We can’t wait to become a part of the
community,” Davis said, after he was
hired.
Approximately 50 people, including
staff, students and community members,
turned out for the called meeting to wel
come Davis to the school system.
OTHER BUSINESS
In other business at the called meet
ing, the following personnel items were
approved:
• retirements: Karen Nelson and Angie
Minish, both teachers as Banks County
Primary School.
•resignations: Donna Cherveny,
Banks County Middle School teacher;
and Shelby Pendley, BCPS paraprofes-
sional.

Davis told the group gathered for the called BOE meeting that his family is
eager to become a part of the Banks County community.

voting
coming up
Advance voting for the May
20 election in Banks County is
set for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday
through Friday, April 28-May 16,
at the Banks County Registrars
Office, Candler Street, Homer.
Saturday voting will be held
from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May
10. The race for the District
1 seat on the Banks County
Board of Commissioners,
between incumbent Danny
Maxwell and Gary Clark, will
be voted on county wide.
The candidate running for the
District 1 seat is required to live
in that district but the vote is
open to all citizens in the coun
ty. Banks County voters can
register to vote in the May 20
election now through Monday
April 21, at the registrar’s office.
Qualifying
underway
in Lula
Qualifying is being held in
the City of Lula through 4:30
p.m. on Wednesday.
Candidates are qualifying to
fill the council seat previously
held by Norm Harrop, who
resigned because he planned
to move out of the city. As
of Tuesday morning, Garnett
Smith was the only candidate
to qualify.

'Easter in the Park' planned April 19 in Homer
“Easter in the Park” will be held in
downtown Homer on Saturday April
19, from 1-3 p.m. The event is free.
There will be story time with
Penny Praise and Lauren Patrick, an
Easter egg hunt, petting zoo, face
painting, pony rides by the Banks
Crossing Saddle Club, hotdog lunch
by Commerce County Cafe and
Redemption Outreach, lemonade
and treats served by Becky Taylor,
a book signing with Banks County
author, Penny Praise, and illustrators,
Lauren and Meagan Patrick.
Story time begins at 1 p.m. The
one and two-yearolds egg hunt will
be from 1-3 p.m. in the Veterans Park.
The three-yearolds egg hunt will be
on the Historic Courthouse lawn at
1:15 p.m. Families can all hunt togeth
er on the lawn.
All other activities are available
from 1:30-3 p.m.
Parking is available at the
Courthouse or City Hall.
Yonah Homer Road, between the
Courthouse and Historic Homer
Hwy., will be closed. Mulberry and
Mason streets will be closed around
the park.
The event is provided by Homer
Downtown Development, Homer
Garden Club, Redemption Outreach
and Commerce County Cafe.
