Stan Davis, superintendent, asked the Banks County board of education at its September work session if they would be interested in looking into that option. Davis plans to gather information over the coming months and give the BOE an update around December. Davis told the board he plans to look at other school systems that currently charge tuition. “I want to give a report by December and give you guys an idea of what it would look like if we decided to go that route,” said Davis. OTHER BUSINESS Also at its meeting, the BOE •received a financial update. This month’s ELOST was up approximately $20,000 from last year, totaling at $266,747. •received an update on the renova tions to the high school track. New equip ment is being purchased that can accom modate region track and cross-country meets. • approved a 14.511 millage rate. Decked out in blue and white SPIRIT CHALLENGE Businesses in Homer are getting into the spirit of football season for the Banks County High School Leopards with a “spirit challenge.” Last Friday, Honeysuckle Gifts and Tangles Salon started off the challenge by dressing in spirit wear and decorat ing the business and then challenging Cuttin’ Up Salon to do the same. AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT Baldwin man killed in one-vehicle crash on Friday IN BRIEF No one qualifies for Altos special election No one qualified, last week, for the Town of Alto’s special election to be held on Nov. 4. “The council will try for another special election in March 2015,” said Laurel Ellison, Habersham County elections supervisor. Package found to be 'non-threatening' A suspicious found at a Banks Crossing location on Wednesday was found to be “non-threatening.” “The scene has been secured and the package has been cleared as non-threaten ing,” Banks County Sheriffs Office spokesman Carrisa McFaddin said Wednesday afternoon. “The original owner has been located and the contents have been returned.” The Banks County Sheriff’s Office responded Wednesday morning to the report of a sus picious package on the out side perimeter of Quality Inn which, is located in the Banks Crossing area. Authorities took precautionary measures by requesting the Georgia Bureau of Investigation EOD unit to the scene. The sur rounding area was evacuat ed and contained by Banks County authorities.” Space below reserved for mailing label A 30-year-old Baldwin man died in a one-vehicle accident on Friday morning, Sept. 5, when his vehicle left the roadway and lost control. Trooper Nic Johnson of the Georgia State Patrol said a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer, driven by Rogelio Zavala-Mora, 260 Midnight Street, Apt. D-4, spun out across the road and hit the ditch on the opposite side of the road head on and overturned. The vehicle flipped over and landed back on its wheels. “The driver was not wearing his seatbelt and was killed instantly, Johnson said. The wreck occurred on Industrial Park Road, just off Duncan Bridge Road, and the road was shut down for almost two hours. Johnson said he is not sure what caused Zavala-Mora to run off the road, but it was an uphill curve to the left and he went off the right side initially and over-corrected and slid sideways to the opposite side of the road. ELCO\ WEEKEND EVENT Lula Fall Festival set for Saturday at train depot The Lula Fall Festival will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., rain or shine, at the Lula Train Depot. The festival will feature over 50 booths, including folk art, pottery handcrafted items, children’s activities - free “mural painting, and fantastic food, organizers state. Local acts will take the stage beginning at noon. Featured entertainers include Mike Perdue, Doug Freeman, IMPACT Band, Jerry Willis, First Baptist Church of Lula’s Gospel Choir and other area churches. The Lula Train Depot is located at 5959 Athens Street, Lula. FESTIVAL TIME Lula’s festival will feature over 50 booths as well as entertainment.
