Gillespie's team reached the Elite Eight before bowing out against Marist. Thompson ... Cont. from IB The goal would have to be to keep the teams as geographically in line as possible and looking at it, I see at least one change I would recommend: Switch the two 1998 expansion teams to the opposite league. • AL East Baltimore Orioles Boston Red Sox New York Yankees Toronto Blue Jays •AL North Chicago White Sox Cleveland Indians Detroit Tigers Minnesota Twins • AL South Arizona Diamondbacks Houston Astros Kansas City Royals Texas Rangers • AL West Las Vegas expansion team Los Angeles Angels Oakland As Seattle Mariners • NL East Montreal expansion team New York Mets Philadelphia Phillies Washington Nationals • NL North Chicago Cubs Milwaukee Brewers Pittsburgh Pirates St. Louis Cardinals • NL South Atlanta Braves Cincinnati Reds Miami Marlins Tampa Bay Rays • NL West Colorado Rockies Los Angeles Dodgers San Diego Padres San Francisco Giants My preferred align ment would actually be to go back to the one used from 1969-1993 when each league was split into two divisions. While on the sur face the eight-division for mat creates better excite ment with more divisional races potentially being on the line late in the season, it also allows for stronger possibility that we get a division champion with a roughly .500 record. That’s one of my biggest beefs with the NFL where a team can finish 7-9 and win its division and get to host a Wild Card team that might be as good as 12-4, all while a 10-6 team might be left out of the playoffs entirely. Here’s how my preferred alignment would look. Note that I would keep Arizo na and Tampa Bay in their respective leagues, but I would revert Houston back to the NL and Milwaukee back to the AL. • NL East Atlanta, Cincinnati, Miami Montreal, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Washington • NL West Arizona, Chicago, Colo rado, Houston, Los Ange les, San Diego, San Francis co, St. Louis • AL East Baltimore, Boston, Chica go, Cleveland, Detroit, New York, Toronto, Tampa Bay • AL West Kansas City, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Minnesota, Oakland, Seat tle, Texas MLB is also likely to expand its postseason again at some point, especially when there is realignment, but it should avoid going too big like the NBA and NHL. Under the eight-division alignment, the expanded MLB postsea son could closely resemble the current NFL playoff for mat. Scott Thompson is editor of the Barrow News-Jour nal.
