Mrs. Bridg es was born in Ohio, the daughter of Henry Webb of Texas and the late Betty West Felts. Mrs. Bridges was a homemaker who was a loving wife, mother, nana and friend to many, who devoted her life to God and her family. Mrs. Jackson had worked in the banking industry in Winder for 30 years, retiring in December of 1992, and had worked as a volun teer of AARP Tax Aide from 1994 until 2017. She was a member of the Winder First Baptist Church and was active in The Jug Tavern Quilters. He was retired from the United States Air Force after serving his country 26 years and enjoying the opportunity was a member of to travel, experience life in many different places, and make some priceless friendships along the way. July 12, 2017. (12407) William Isaac ‘Bill’ Segars, PhD ATHENS - Dr. William “Bill” Segars, 74, passed away Friday July 7, 2017. Dr. Segars, originally from Com merce, was raised on a cotton farm in Banks County, Ga. and gradu ated with honors from the Univer sity of Georgia in 1964 with a B.S. Agronomy. As an R.O.T.C. graduate, he served his country with distinction during the Vietnam-era conflict as a commissioned officer assigned to the 2nd Armored Division. He received his Master’s degree in agronomy, from the University of Georgia, and his Ph.D. in agronomy with a minor in plant physiology, from Clemson University in 1972. Dr. Segars served as area agrono mist, soybean specialist, and cot ton specialist with the University of Georgia Extension Service. He was employed from 1975-1979 by Gold Kist, Inc., in Atlanta. In 1979, Dr. Segars returned to the University of Georgia as Soil and Fertilizer Specialist and in 1985 was appointed as Extension Soil Scientist with major responsibili ties in animal and organic waste management. In 1989, he was selected as Extension’s Water Qual ity Coordinator, where he devel oped a nationally known program in groundwater protection. Since 1990, Dr. Segars has been the principal director and recipient of federal and state grants for Groundwater Pro tection Educational Project totaling over one and a half million dollars. As a widely-acclaimed expert in the area of waste management and groundwater protection, he served on numerous advisory committees for the US-EPA, GA Department of Natural Resource, the GA Envi ronmental Protection Division, the USDA-Natural Resource Conserva tion Service, the State Soil and Water Conservation Commission, the Tennessee Valley Authority, Georgia Department of Agriculture, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and numerous other organizations. Dr. Segars was a Certified Pro fessional Agronomist and Certified Crop Advisor by the American Society of Agronomy. He received numerous awards and recognition during his career including the Georgia Plant Food Educational Society’s two highest awards - an Honorary Lifetime Membership and the Blair W. Davis Outstanding Ser vice Award. He was awarded the Distinguished Achievement Award in Public Service and Extension from The University of Georgia, the Distinguished Service Award from both the Georgia and Nation al County Agents Association, a Certificate of Excellence from the American Society of Agronomy, and an Award of Excellence from Epsilon Sigma Phi. Dr. Segars was a member of numerous professional and honor ary societies including, Classic City Lions Club, Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi, Gamma Sigma Delta, Ameri can Society of Agronomy, American Water Resources Association, and the National Groundwater Associa tion. Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years, Barbara Brown Segars; his brother, Jackson Segars (Josie); daughter, Alecia Segars Provenzano (Michael); son, Alan Segars (Jacquie); and grandchil dren, Chris Morris (Amy), Stephen Morris (Emma) and Sarah Segars; and great-grandchildren, AvaGrace Morris and Rosalee Morris. Although her family is deeply saddened by her passing, knowing that she is at peace and no longer in pain is a blessing to them all. She was originally from Winder and was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Mary Sue Cox of Winder. Survivors include her husband, John W. Thompson Jr., Athens; son, John W. Thompson III; daughter- in-law, Shannon Leigh Hughes Thompson; and two grandchildren, Addie and John David Thompson, Cumming. Mary Ellen also leaves behind aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. She was a loving and caring wife, an incredible mother and grand mother, and was the consummate caregiver and friend. She always cared for others without concern for her own wellbeing. “Maga” as she was known by her grandchildren, was always there to offer support, leadership, and guidance in the best and darkest of times. She was often the rock for many in her family, and she will be missed, but will always be in the heart of all who knew her. Mary Ellen was a 1966 graduate of Winder Barrow High school, and a 1969 graduate of Breneau Univer sity School of Nursing. She worked at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens for 30 years. During her time there, she served as the head nurse of intensive care and critical care coordinator. (12690-58.45) Jean Watson Jean Lois Donald Watson, 88, passed peacefully Tuesday, July 4, 2017, at Winder Health Care where she had been a resident for over two years. She previ ously resided in Bethlehem, Ga. since 2003 after moving from Baltimore, Md., where she had lived for over 70 years. Born Febru ary 12, 1929, in Baltimore, Md., she was the third of five children to John and Edna Donald. Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Edward Jerome Watson, Baltimore, Md. and Bethlehem, Ga. She was blessed with a full life and took great joy in her four grandchil dren and three great-grandchildren. She loved to crochet, garden and cook family dinners. She will be remembered for her practical jokes and quick wit, but mostly as a lov ing mother. Survivors include her two daughters, Deborah (Robert) Zeiler, Suwanee, Ga. and Stepha nie (James) Corley, Savannah; and her youngest sister, Gloria Trentin, Pennsylvania. Rerun: Linda Lee Whitlock Linda Lee Woods Whitlock, 61 of Baldwin, passed away on Friday, June 30, 2017. Born on January 18, 1956, in Decatur, Ga., she was the daugh ter of Louise Hudson Harris and William Meredith Woods. Ms. Whitlock served in the U.S. Forest Service and was a retired educator, having worked for Banks, Hall, and Habersham Counties as a teacher and as a school counselor. She loved her students, family, and friends and took great joy in helping others. She loved her bam and her animals, and was an accomplished horsewoman, having ridden horses all over the world. Survivors include her husband, Bobby Whitlock; son and daughter- in-law, Ben and Courtney Hinson, Hendersonville, N.C.; mother and stepfather, Louise and Jimmy Har ris, Alto; stepson, Cody Whitlock, Maysville; stepdaughter, Bree Whit lock, Maysville; sister and brother- in-law, Diane Woods and Sam Huff, Kennesaw; other extended fam ily and friends; and beloved dog, Mercy, and favorite horse, Jack. Memorial services were held Tuesday, July 4, at Tates Creek Baptist Church with Pastor Jerrell Beatty and Rev. Jim McLendon officiating. A reception followed the service in the church fellow ship hall.
