LEARNING THE STEPS

Football... Cont. from IB
of practice, you get tired of beating on each
other, and this way we get to go against
somebody else and see how they do.”
For many of the players, it was their first
experience with a joint-practice setting, he
added.
“They did some drills that we had never
done,” Shoemaker said, “and so, they did
some things we had never seen and had to
do. So, it was good for us, again, to be put
in (situations), because you always want to
be put in game-like situations and things that
you can allow your kids to work through,
that are going to duplicate those game-type
deals.
“So, it allowed us to do that. That helped
us.”
Some of the competitions included one-
on-one and two-on-two drills to go along
with the 7-on-7 scrimmage game.
“Now, all of a sudden you’re going against
someone you’ve never gone against before,”
Shoemaker said. “Somebody who’s a little
more athletic, maybe faster or just different.
“They play their coverages different. They
coach their kids a little bit different in how
they do things. So, it was good for our kids
from the competition aspect of it. It’s always
good for them to get to do that.”
From the coaching perspective, from
now until the Aug. 4 scrimmage game vs.
Habersham Central High School, Shoemak
er wants to just see his squad execute what
they’ve practiced.
“We’ve got to be in shape and be able
to execute and mn what we run,” he said.
“Obviously, offensively, I want to be able to
execute and mn our plays. Then, defensively,
I want to line up correctly and be able to
adjust to what the other team’s doing.
“Right now, I’m looking for effort and
execution.”

COACH OF THE YEAR

Kyle ... Cont. from IB
But one thing was clear,
Atlanta didn’t have just an
ordinary expansion fran
chise. New teams are sup
posed to be terrible. Those
first years are supposed to
be the dark years of a fran
chise before it’s built into a
contender.
The most recent expan
sion teams in all major
American sports have been
losers. Orlando City SC and
New York City FC, the last
two MLS franchises, both
had losing records in their
inaugural seasons. In fact,
all four previous expansion
franchises (Philadelphia
Union, Portland Timbers,
Vancouver Whitecaps and
Montreal Impact) had los
ing records in their first
season.
All six NFL expansion
teams in the post-merg
er era (1970-present) had
losing records in their first
seasons; the Tampa Bay
Buccaneers even lost their
first 26 games. Every single
MLB and NBA expansion
franchise started their exis
tence with a losing record.
So even though there was
reason to be enthusiastic
about Adanta United’s first
season, there certainly was
no reason to be optimistic
because brand new fran
chises just aren’t any good.
And yet there was.
They showed an ability to
score goals at any moment
and with any player. They
also showed off an intensity
and set of skills to hang
around with anyone in the
MLS.
A week after Atlanta’s
first game, they traveled
to Minnesota to play the
other new team. In a game
played in the snow, Atlanta
won 6-1 and Josef Mar
tinez scored six of them.
Atlanta returned to Bobby
Dodd Stadium the fol
lowing weekend and dis
patched of the Chicago Fire
4-1. Martinez scored two
in that game to make his
name known as one of the
league’s best scorers.
Unfortunately, Martinez
went down with an inju
ry while playing for the
Venezuelan National team.
Right before Adanta trav
eled to Seadle to take on
the defending MLS Cham
pions, the Seatde Sound
ers. Without Martinez,
the Sounders were a clear
favorite at home. But Adan-

ta didn’t go to Seattle to

to a 0-0 draw.
Atlanta then traveled to
Toronto to play one of the
better teams from 2016 and
ended that match with a

Atlanta United was 2-1-2.
Not bad, not great.
But April and May were

Toronto, Atlanta won only
one of their following five
games. That included losses
