WEDNESDAY, JULY 19, 2017 THE BANKS COUNTY NEWS PAGE 3B School News Summer hours, registration dates listed for high school July 18 - 20 from 1:30 Smith named head D.J., assistant editor at Georgia College July hours at Banks Coun ty High School will be Mon day through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. A counselor will be avail able at the school on the fol lowing dates and times: July 17-20 (1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.), July 25-July 27 (8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.), July 31 - August 3 (8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.). New student registration will be held on the following dates: Banks County High School will host a freshmen cookout during open house on Tues day Aug. 1, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the freshmen wing of BCHS. Students will be able to pick up schedules, meet the Team Freshmen faculty, and take an informal tour. A hot dog dinner will be provided free of charge. BCHS upperclassmen open house will be on Thurs day August 3, from 3 p.m. to New student registration dates have been set at Banks County Middle School. The schedule is as follows: • Wednesday, July 26, from noon to 5 p.m. The WorkSource Georgia Mountains Career Coach will participate in the ‘Striding For A Better Banks’ event to be held on Saturday, July 29, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. The event is being held at p.m. to 3:30 p.m. •July 25 - 27 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. • July 31 - August 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. In order to complete the registration process the fol lowing items are necessary: • Proof of Banks Co. Res idency - only power bills, water bills, land-line phone bills, or rental/lease agree ments are accepted •A copy of the student’s 5 p.m. Students will be able to pick up schedules and meet teachers. All parents are invited as well. Locker and parking per mits will also be available for purchase during this time. Parking and locker permit applications must be signed by a parent and are available in the front foyer of the high school. The fee for a locker is $5 and parking permits are $50. No new student regis- a.m. to 1 p.m. • Monday July 31, through Friday August 4, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. In other school news, the the Banks County Recreation Department, whcih is locat ed at 607 Thompson Street in Homer. This is a free “Family Out reach Celebration” providing a full range of services for Social Security card •A copy of the student’s birth certificate • If student does not reside with both biological parents, then official court documents proving legal guardianship are required •Photo identification of the legal guardian • Official withdrawal form from previous school •Official transcript from previous school •Discipline record from previous school trations will be completed during open house on Thurs day, August 3, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. PARKING PERMIT BCHS will hold sales for parking permits for the 2017- 18 school year. Upcoming seniors may purchase their parking permits on July 19 and July 20 and juniors may purchase them July 26 through July 27. Mighty Leopards parking (All A’s & B’s, no more than annual 6th grade “Locker Day” will be held on Tues day, July 25, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sixth graders can stop by the school and get use to back to school and safety. The career coach will help local residents search and apply for jobs, write resumes and cover letters and discern their career interests. Well, tune into WGUR 95.3 in Milledgeville, to start your new week and you may recognize the distinguished voice of Isaiah Smith on the airways as the “Monday Morning Sports Junkie.” Smith produces and com mentates this show and can be heard giving detailed information as well as his sports expertise about sport ing events of the past and upcoming weeks and week end. Smith is an upcoming senior and Mass Commu nications major at Georgia College in Milledgeville. Along with juggling a full schedule of classes, and pro ducing his talk show he also works as a sports stringer for the local paper The Union Recorder, reporting on sport ing events and players for Baldwin and surrounding counties in Milledgeville. Smith has been named the 2017 assistant editor of the student-ran and produced newspaper The Colonnade, on Georgia College Campus. He is also the 2017 produc er for new DJ’s interning for WGUR, the student-ran and produced radio station on Georgia College Campus. While sharing his many talents on the airways at WGUR, Smith was named the DJ of the month for Octo ber. During his time at Geor gia College Smith has been named to either the Presi dent’s or Dean’s List each semester. Smith was accepted to attend the 2017 Georgia Association of Broadcasters conference in June at the SMITH University of Georgia in Ath ens. He completed a practi- cum during spring semes ter at WRGC radio station in Milledgeville where his job was a digital production assistant. Smith also attended a broadcasting conference in the spring in New York. While continuing to work on his communication skills Smith will intern as a report er at The Union Recorder newspaper in Milledgeville for the summer. When asked what led him towards mass communica tion, he replies, “I wanted to be a mass communication major because I’ve always enjoyed writing and journal ism and that gives me a way to continue writing as well as to use my voice to help people and make the world a better place.” Smith plans to graduate in the spring and then pursue a career in communication. “I want to use my voice to share something I love a lot, know a lot about, and like to talk about and that’s sports,” he said. Smith is a 2014 graduate of Banks County High School and will be completing his degree in mass communi cation at Georgia College in May of 2018. He is the son of A.D. and Eleaner Smith of Homer. Freshmen, upperclassmen open houses planned BCMS new student registration scheduled Thursday, July 27, from 9 Career coach to be at recreation center Blood drive planned July 24 The Banks County High School HOSA (Future Healthcare Professional of America) will be hosting a blood drive on Monday July 24, from 2 to 7 p.m. in the activity room at the school. “This is an urgent need time of year for the Ameri can Red Cross,” organizers state. “ Please help and donate. Bottom line is you will help save lives plus send students to conference this fall. Stu dents will receive $10 per pint over the first 30 pints donated. This money will go towards the students HOSA activities for the fall leader ship conference.
