MEDIA & ADVERTISING USE IN GEORGIA HOW GEORGIA NEWSPAPERS STACK UP DEBUNKING NEWSPAPER MYTHS To paraphrase Mark Twain, reports of newspapers' death are greatly exaggerated, especially in Georgia. However, long-held myths hold on forever, especially in the hearts of competing media salesmen. Data developed by American Opinion Research (AOR) dispels most of these shibboleths and casts a clear and bright light on newspapers' strengths. AOR is one of the nation's top independent research firms, with no links to any specific client or organization. AOR's clients include Procter and Gamble, Johnson & Johnson, General Motors, Citi Bank, The New York Times Company, Seattle Times, McGraw-Hill, Berlitz and many others. Shoppers turn to the internet first when planning a major product purchase. Today's Consumer has almost completely abandoned newspapers as a news and advertising source. □ TRUE ^ FALSE • Newspapers and their websites are the most used source of local news and information; higher than local television, which is also fragmented in most markets • Georgia consumers rely on printed newspapers and their websites more than any other source for local news and shopping information, in both the Atlanta metro area and the rest of the state □ TRUE ^ false • Georgia consumers are more than 50% more likely to use newspapers to find out what’s for sale before going shopping than any other source • Half of adults have made a purchase during an average 30-day period because of something they saw or read in a printed newspaper or newspaper website; 30% higher than any other advertising source Radio, TV and direct mail are thriving in today's media environment. Newspaper readership has collapsed in the face of increased internet usage. □ TRUE ^ FALSE • Two-thirds of Georgia adult consumers use a newspaper product during an average week, either reading a printed newspaper or accessing a newspaper website • Females read more frequently than men, important since they make most purchase decisions in traditional households • Weekly community newspapers also have wide reach in Georgia; almost six-in-ten adults read at least once a month, 40 percent during an average week • Weekly newspapers have long shelf life, which should make them more attractive to advertisers; they remain in readers' homes about three days, about half are kept five days or longer • On average, two adults read each copy of a weekly newspaper Newspaper websites are an afterthought by newspapers and do not attract significant usage. □ TRUE ^ FALSE □ true ^FALSE • Radio lacks effective reach; only 28% of consumers say they listen to a commercial when it comes on a station, most other pay little or no attention • Few consumers (19%) watch commercials when they come on television; the vast majority of adults do something else, such as household chores, lower the sound, change the channel or leave the room • Direct mail also has little effective reach; about a third of consumers say they read it thoroughly, but more than 2/3 just glance at it, or throw it away without reading N MainStreet EWSPAPER • More than 1.3 million Georgia adults use a newspaper website daily, almost 2.8 million during an average week • Adults age 18 to 34 visit newspaper websites as frequently as any other age group • Younger adults are also more likely to use a newspaper website at least weekly Sponsored by MainStreet Newspapers and the Georgia Press Association
