Photo by Charles Phelps Column Spieth shows grit in England Let the comparisons begin. Let the compari sons between Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth officially begin now. As a golf fan, Tiger Woods was my favorite athlete growing up and through my adult years (albeit with a scandal that totally derailed his career, with injuries; however he did that to himself. This is about what he did on the golf course). Tiger was charismatic on the course. Tiger hit it fur ther than anyone else. Tiger pulled off shots that no one else could pull off. My all-time favorite “Tiger” shot came at the 2002 PGA Championship when Tiger hit a 3-iron out of a fairway bunker onto the green and strolled in the birdie putt to close out his second round. You may be thinking, “Fair way bunker shot doesn’t sound hard,” but he did it with his feet planted outside of the bunker. No part of his body was inside the bunker. Only he could pull that shot off. That was nearly 15 years ago next month. After this past weekend’s 146th edi tion of the Open Champi onship, Jordan Spieth has tmly entered the Tiger com parison. As a Tiger fan, that doesn’t bother me. OK, sure, Spieth squan dered a 3-shot lead in a very short amount of time on Sunday, which was something Tiger rarely did, but it was the resiliency that Spieth showed after losing the lead on the 13th hole that makes me think of Tiger Woods, and also some of the shots he hit through out the week and making clutch bird ie, par and bogey putts when he needed to make them. Case in point: let’s focus on the 13th hole (as mentioned previously). Spieth hits a ter rible drive. It is so far off line that they have to search for the golf ball. After finding the ball, Spieth goes through every option he has within the mles of the game. He finally makes a choice that was within the mles. He then had to get up and down for a bogey after com ing up short on his third shot. A bogey meant he would only be one shot behind going to the 14th hole. He hit a beautiful, gorgeous, use an adjective to describe the chip shot. It was awesome. To top it off, he made the bogey putt. It was Tigeresque to say the least. On the 14th hole, Spieth nearly made a hole-in-one, then eagled the 15th, fol lowed by two birdies on 16 and 17. So, he went from one stroke down to two strokes See “Phelps” on 2B Column People should lighten up about Gwinnett Braves name change A pitching change late in a close, low-scoring game. Call ing for a bunt with two outs. Trading away a star player. All issues in baseball worthy of fan criticism and questioning. Those are decisions clubs make that the biggest fans should be worried about and discussing the most. Howev er, those are not the issues that have fans of the Gwinnett Braves riled up this summer. Fans aren’t discussing the fact kyle fiinderburk that Gwinnett is nine games behind in the International League South, or 10 games back in the Wild Card race. They’re not talking about the team win ning all five of their games last week. No, the biggest story for the team this summer is what will they be named next season. Earlier this season, the Gwinnett Braves announced that they were planning on changing the team’s nickname in the offseason. When that window closed, the front office chose six of the names for fans to vote on. And boy did that ruffle some feathers. The six names chosen set off a blitz krieg of backlash. The names chosen were the Buttons, Big Mouths, Gob blers, Sweet Tea’s, Hush Puppies and Lambchops. Surely, they could have chosen better names, but they’re not all terrible. We'll get the worse names out of the way first.
