'Gold Digging in Georgia' on display

is on permanent display as
part of a new exhibition in
the Hargrett Galleries of the
Richard B. Russell Special
Collections Library at the
University of Georgia.
The exhibition - Gold Dig
ging in Georgia: America’s
First Gold Rush - highlights
the history of North Georgia
gold mining from the 1820s
to the Civil War. It features
photos, historical docu
ments, artifacts and more.
A key part of the exhi
bition is a complete set of
gold coins produced at the
Dahlonega Mint prior to the
Civil War.
The set was accumulated
by Bob Harwell, president
of Atlanta’s Hancock & Har
well Rare Coin and Precious
Metal Company.
Harwell is one of the
world’s leading experts on
Dahlonega Gold Coins. To
date Hancock & Harwell has
accumulated over 20 sets of
Dahlonega coins for clients
since beginning business in
the 1970s.
The set on display at the
University of Georgia was
accumulated over a six-year
period from across the Unit
ed States for Atlanta collector
John McMullan. McMullan
donated this set of Dahlone
ga coins - called the Reed
Creek Collection - to the Uni
versity for their permanent
collection. The set is valued
at nearly a million dollars.
There are 62 coins in the
collection on display.
“Coins from the Dahlone
ga Mint are a unique and last
ing relic of an important part
of Georgia history,” said Har
well. “Dahlonega predates
the California Gold Rush,
and spawned the first indus
trialization of North Georgia.”
Harwell’s interest in
Dahlonega gold coins dates
to the 1970s when he and his
late partner, Jack Hancock,
assembled their first set for
clients.
One of Harwell’s most
famous sets of Dahlonega
coins was the Duke’s Creek
Collection, a complete set
of uncirculated Dahlonega
gold.
According to Harwell, no
one really knows who first
discovered gold in Dahlone
ga, Georgia, in 1828, but there
is no doubt that a gold rush
began.
By the spring of 1830 there
were over 4,000 miners look
ing for gold. By the mid-1830s
the need for a United States
Mint in Dahlonega was rec
ognized, and the mint was
opened in 1838. By the time it
closed in 1861, the Dahlone
ga Mint had produced almost
1.5 million gold coins with a
face value of more than $6
million.
In addition to the set on
display at UGA, there are
sets on public display at the
Dahlonega Gold Museum in
Dahlonega, and at the Fed
eral Reserve Bank in Atlanta.

December 6, 2017.

These two coins are among those on display in
a new exhibit, “Gold Digging in Georgia,” at the
University of Georgia.

At a recent program at the Maysville Public
Library, the students read “Chicka Chicka Boom
Boom!” by Bill Martin. They also made coconut
alphabet trees to go along with the book.

Senior Center Renovation Construction
BID REQUEST
Notice is given that the foregoing has issued an invitation to submit sealed
bid proposals for the construction of a renovation/expansion to the Banks
County Senior Center. This project is being funded through a Commu
nity Development Block Grant (CDBG), and is a Section 3 covered con
tract. Complete construction documents and bid specifications may be
obtained by contacting Zak Bryant via email zbryant@rdesignworks.
com. Bids will be accepted until 2:00 PM on Thursday, August 10,
2017 at the Office of Banks County Commissioners, 150 Hudson Ridge,
Suite 1, Homer, Georgia 30547 and clearly marked as “Banks County
Senior Center” on the exterior. No bids will be accepted after the due
date and time. Sealed bids will be opened at a special called meeting of
the Banks County Board of Commissioners at 2:30 PM, August 10, 2017
in the Board Room of the Banks County Courthouse Annex located at
150 Hudson Ridge, Homer, GA 30547. A decision will be made as to the
acceptance of bids at 6:30 PM on August 22, 2017 at the regularly sched
uled meeting of the Banks County Board of Commissioners. There are
very specific requirements as to the format for bid submission. The Banks
County Board of Commissioners reserves the right to reject any and all
bids and to waive any informality.
