o o OCTOBER 11,2023 Softball: Lady Leopards take first place in region By HANNAH CAUDELL The Lady Leopards softball team competed against the Union County Lady Panthers and the Providence Christian Lady Storm last week. The suffered their first region loss against the Panthers on Tuesday with a score of 9-1. How ever, the Lady Leopards came back later in the week to once again gain a one-point lead on Providence Christian with a score of 6-5. The Lady Leopards now have a 18-5 overall record and a 7-1 2A Region 8 record. They currently hold first place in the region. This week, the Lady Leopards will face off one more time against the East Jackson Lady Eagles at East Jackson High School on Tuesday, Oct. 10, at 5:30 p.m. The East Jackson game will conclude the regular season’s region matches. On Thursday, Oct. 12, the Lady Leopards will compete in a double-header at home against the Lake Oconee Acad emy Lady Titans. The first game will begin at 4:30 p.m., and the second game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The Banks County High School Lady Leopard softball team is first in the region. Cross Country: Leopards compete in Jefferson Invitational The Leopards Cross Country team traveled to the Jack- son County Airport on Friday to compete against teams across the North Georgia area and beyond dining the Jef ferson Invitational. During the races, Pepper Davis placed in the top 20 runners, and Bailey Baker led the Lady Leop ards to the finish line. Davis once again led the Leopards during the boys’ var sity race with a time of 16 minutes and 55 seconds, placing 19th out of 130 competitors. Andrew Pope and Jakub Cote also placed in the top 100 in 78th and 98th place, respectively. Pope ran the 5k in 18 minutes and 58 seconds, while Cote crossed the finish line with a time of 20 minutes and 14 seconds. Zion Rathbun also competed during the race, running 26 minutes and 24 seconds toward the finish. Rathbun beat the time he ran in the Mountain Invitational by over a minute. Bailey Baker led the Lady Leopards on the course, plac ing 54th with a time of 24 minutes and 29 seconds. Baker beat her last time in the Mountain Invitational by 45 sec onds. Maggie Irvin wasn’t far behind, placing 73rd with a time of 25 minutes and 53 seconds. The Leopards will take a week off and return to the course on Thursday, Oct. 19. They will be competing in the Athens Academy US Home Meet at Athens Academy High School, and the races will begin at 4:30 p.m. Pepper Davis continues to lead the Leopards at cross country meets. Football: Leopards take 27-7 loss against Union County Panthers By HANNAH CAUDELL The Leopards Football team lost against their sec ond region opponent, the Union County Panthers, on Friday with a score of 27-7. The Banks County Leop ards traveled to Blairsville on Friday to go against the Union County Panthers for their second region match of the season. While the Leopards were able to get a touchdown on the Panthers, the Panthers ended up with a 20-point lead. Aucy Jacobs took the ball into the endzone during the game, and a successful kick from Irani Lopez brought the Leopards up seven points, an improvement from their game last week against the East Jackson Ea gles. A wall of Leopard de fenders also make strategic defensive plays during the game. Webb Samples, Cam Cooper, Bray Williams, and Robert Walker were credit ed with the most solo tack les, while Kaz Oliver led with the most assisted tack les. Aaron Scott, Judd Shoe maker, Dayden Rogers, Ca- den Watson, Colin Caudell, Clay Smith, Zack Dickey, Andrew Humphries, Levi Johnson, Mason Dodd, and Jacobs were also instrumen tal on the defensive line. This week, the Leopards will be taking a break from the field while they enjoy their fall break. Next week, the Leopards will be on the home field playing against the Ath ens Academy Spartans at home on Friday, Oct. 20, at 7:30 p.m.
